Has anyone else who owns the second season of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex experienced problems playing the discs? When I first rented the series through Netflix, I noticed they tended to skip in places and were badly encoded (the second and third discs specifically; the tachikoma short loops back to the start of the previous episode, so you have to go to the disc menu again to get to the next episode), but I chalked that up to the general bad quality of discs I've recieved from Netflix. However, when I bought my own copies of the DVDs, I noticed that they had the same problems with episodes looping and skipped in exactly the same places. It's not too bad for the majority of the series, but the last episodes on the fifth, sixth, and seventh volumes are simply unwatchable because of the skips. It's like the sound will cut out for a moment and the animation will freeze, but the disc will keep going so it picks up after skipping a couple of seconds, usually in the middle of dialogue.

Also, I've only ever played the discs (rented or the ones I bought) on my computer, using VLC media player. Is it possible that I just need a new DVD-ROM drive (the one I have now is ~8 years old and was moved from my old computer to the one I built just a few months ago), or is it a problem with the disc?

my disc work fine, I would suggest a new DVD player, or try a different program for playing dvd's.

Guess I'll have to go buy a new DVD-ROM drive, then, and see if that works Anime hyper It should be replaced anyway.

I just finished re-watching 2nd Gig and I also had trouble playing them but only on my PS2 and 360. The DVD would be playing fine and all of a sudden "cannot read disc".

I switched to my laptop instead an it worked fine.

If I have to resort to my laptop to watch a series, it sucks cause the whole point of purchasing DVDs in my case is to watch them on my TV. If I wanted to use my laptop I would just download the series off the internet.

Normally I don't side with illegal downloading but when companies release messed up DVDs, I don't wanna buy from them so I just go on a downloading spree.

I have all of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex on DVD and mine all play absolutely flawlessly. So does Solid State Society as well. I play all my DVDs on a regular and fairly new DVD player with a surround sound setup and fairly large TV though so my results may varry. Sounds like an equipment issue to me though given the age of your player. Cheap or old players have trouble a lot with interpreting encoding. You could try updating the software drivers on you DVD ROM drive to see if there is a newer version available.

My old computer (the one the drive came out of) was a factory model, and I haven't been able to locate any new drivers (that was one of the things I checked out while trying to figure out why the discs wouldn't play correctly). My 2nd GIG DVDs are the only ones I have problems with; the first season of SAC and SSS, plus everything else in my collection, play fine, which is why I thought I should ask if there was just a bad batch of discs or something. They still skip a little when viewed on my TV (and have that problem with the tachikoma shorts looping around again to the beginning of the previous episode), but our DVD player is also almost 6 years old, so maybe that's not an accurate test.

Dumb question: What region are they? For instance they would be region:

1 for US/Canada
2 for Europe
3 for Asia
4 for Australia, South America and Mexico
5 for India, Africa and Russia
6 for China and so forth.
7 Unassigned
8 Airlines/Cruise Ships
0 Usually equals bootleg but there are some legimate DVDs. Plays on all or most players.

Plus this being a somewhat international board I think it could be relevant. For instance region 2 would obviously have different encoding and therfore you'd need somebody from the UK or Europe to answer. Also if you are trying to play discs with a different region code (say your player is 1 and the discs 2) it would create some playback problems or most likely not play at all. Anyhow just a thought.

Ah, you're playing them on your computer. That might be your problem. What player are you using to watch the DVDs? Windows Media Player? If so, I've noticed a problem with WMP and skipping DVDs too. I would use VLC media player - it plays everything and it's free. I never have problems watching DVDs in VLC.

I use VLC for everything; after several hard drive reformattings (plus getting a new computer and having to install the OS from an upgrade copy of WinXP), I don't even have the codecs to play DVDs in WMP.

I'm almost positive it's my DVD-ROM drive; after all, it's ancient, and it's been banged around a quite bit. Thanks for the help, though, everyone^^
