Very slapdash products. But atleast they made the right choices.
I thought Slam Dunk was big to them? Your Name?no?
Pikachu ,Doreamon etc are probably still coming.

Pikachu and Mario are technically video game characters. Doraemon I'm sure will be in it too.

I think Nozawa did some voice work for the 1964 Tokyo games as well. Crazy to think she might come back 56 years later.

One Piece, Dragonball, Sailor Moon and Precure. Well, is it just me, or that merchandise totally sponsored by just Toei?

Thinking about it again, it was silly to use Mahou PreCure. They should have used Futari wa, or at the least Kira Kira.

Waiting to see Doraemon get included. OP, DB and BSSM are really the only choices that fully made sense to me in general.

Is anyone else amused by the fact they chose last year's Pretty Cure team for the 2020 ambassadors?

Slam Dunk wasn't iconic enough, especially in the sea of sport themed anime. They chose Captain Tsubasa instead for Rio video. If they're going to include anime movie, Ghibli's titles are better choice than your name, unless they need to showcase the most recent monster hit.

I'd guess that the Chinese that argued the inclusion of Goku being doubtful since he was based from their folklore is trying to include the famous character in an Olympic of their own instead, which is annoying because Goku still belonged to a work that is made by a Japanese. The complete disregard for certain other characters like Pikachu and such is questionable but there's still a few years until 2020, and that's more than enough time to fix things. You can't insert every possible iconic characters because there's ton of them, for example Totoro, e.t.c..

I still think it's a poor choice for global mascots. Should've used Saint Seiya or something that's a little more iconic.

These are about selling merch. That's why Captain Tsubasa was in the Rio promotion video but it's not here, because sports series promote sports, not merchandise sales.

Leaving CT asides because it's way bigger than Slam Dunk, you can probably expect Slam Dunk to appear in basketball promotions as the olympics draw near.

I agree, some of those characters are more out of recent popularity than status as Iconic. One being Naruto, he's only recognizable by a small community and was abandoned by Disney. I seriously doubt anyone will recognize him in the 2020 Olympics.

Shinchan, he's just a crude character whose only known for showing his butt. Not excactly a positive rolemodel for the Olympics.

As for these products, too generic.

What shocked me most is the inclusion of Jibanyan. With all due respect, I don't think Yo-Kai Watch is more popular and worldwide known than Pokémon and Doraemon. So, the inclusion of Jibanyan over Pikachu or Doraemon is the least understandable choice for me. On the other hand, I am glad Astro made it. After all, it was Astro Boy who started the whole anime and manga business for what it is now. So, if there is anime character that deserves to be on this list, it's definitely Astro.

Not complaining, but I'm a little surprised the Precure girls were chosen in the end. I know Precure is very popular in japan, but is it well known elsewhere? It seems especially niche in America in comparison to the other titles.

Who knows though, maybe they'll finally get legal streaming to promote the series more.

They all make sense, though I'm a bit iffy about PreCure and Yokai Watch, since they're not as globally recognizable or comparatively iconic (Pikachu, Mario and Sonic are better in that respect). Still, the fact that these characters are popular in Japan might be the larger point in introducing the world to their pop culture, which may be what really matters in the end. Having these character ambassadors in the first place I think is a great way of recognizing the impact of their cultural exports, so I think it's cool that they're making merchandise like this to promote an event as austere as the Olympics.

You'd think they be able to do more than just use stock images. Everyone looks so happy and then you've got Sailor Moon yelling at us.
