Draws porn for a living.
Goes to a cafe to collect promo merch of cartoon girls.
Sees real girls & breaks out in an anxiety sweat.
Vows to alter his schedule to avoid risk of re-occurrence.

GuP is actually Love Live with tanks. Cute girls try to save their school by winning a competition is basically the same plot - except one is aimed at military otaku, and the other is for idol fans.
your name has been a such a phenomenon though that the general public sees all anime as the same thing now. They can't even tell what's moé and what's not.

When I used to hang out at Barnes and Noble because I didn't have Internet. I could have written a book on the number of awkward experiences I had. From people saying they didn't read One Piece because it insulted their intelligence.
To a kid I was discussing Naruto with thinking that Margaret magazine was an author's name and that he didn't read Shojo Manga because it was too "pervy". Nothing as bad what this guy went through but still stuff that makes you shake your head.

I've never really had an encounter such as this, nor any similar situation. Fortunately (or maybe unfortunately), the country in which I live, Spain, has a culture in which people care little and less about anything other than soccer, politics, partying, and gossip news; anything outside that scope is either ignored or glossed over.
The only instance in which I kind of suffered (?) something kind of similar was when I asked for a specific title of a series that I couldn't find on the shelves, and the clerk did not understand what I was asking him (I forgot the manga's title), upon some investigation, it so happened that Spaniards have absolutely no idea about english pronunciation, and what I was saying with correct pronunciation (the series's title) did not register in his brain... and yes, having a correct pronunciation of other languages is loathed about in Spain, as sad as it sounds.

I'd also alter my schedule if I could skip out on stupid conversations.

Ignoring people next to you isn't as easy as me ignoring you here.

Most of the incidents (at least the ones I remember) involving Just Not Getting It that I've witnessed actually come from people who have an interest in anime and manga but get some details very wrong. Usually as a result of conflating two unrelated titles or properties because they have a word in the title in common or sound kind of like something else.
One person, for example, who thought Cardcaptor Sakura was related to Sakura Diaries. A few who thought Full Metal Panic was related to Full Metal Alchemist, and a couple who thought one or both was related to Full Metal Jacket.
Another who thought that Mushishi was about Miyamoto Musashi.

That would be a trippy cross-over, for sure.

I remember hearing some girls on a bus talking about Hetalia really loudly. Usually saying things like "Remember when Italy was hiding in that tomato crate!" "Italy is so stupid!" "But Germany is so hot!" "I hate China though!"- the conversation was going along like that.
I was aware they were talking about Hetalia but I was starting to wonder how long it would take until someone on the bus would freak out and call them racists.. c_c
