I'm pretty surprised they're adapting Hyouka into a live-action this time.
Though, Kento again?
As long as it could sell, I guess, I'm going to tolerate it. I really loved the Hyouka anime.

I'd never use mystery as a genre or classification for Hyouka. While there are indeed mysteries that are solved throughout the text, it's written as a slice-of-life story first and foremost. There is no 'whodunnit' (except of course, for the movie arc but even that is rather unorthodox). There's no grim crime involved. It has far more to say on the unforgiving cruel nature of innate talent vs earnest hard work or the socioeconomic barriers between the wealthy elite and the common simpleton than it has to do actually solving mysteries.
That said, I don't care if whoever eventually licenses this in the USA/UK/Australia emblazons the cover with "MYSTERY", I will still spend a rather large amount to buy an English release. Hyouka is phenomenal, easily Kyoto Animation's best written and directed show, and I am just baffled why I can't own it. With Nichijou rescued why not grab Hyouka as well?

Fellow bafflee checking in. I have to assume there is some secret "behind the scenes" reason preventing a non-Japanese release. I can't imagine it hasn't gotten a license in NA simply because distribs here have thought, "nah, we won't be able to make any money on THAT one."

This is not the Hyouka sequel we were asking for.

Agreed. It has to be that someone on the production committee simply doesn't want any non-Japanese release of this one. I had hoped that perhaps the BD Box set they produced might include English subtitles, and I was prepared to pay the price to import it if they did. Alas, they did not.
I've given up hope, now. It will never be licensed for NA. It will never gain a sequel (there's not enough remaining original material for that, IMO). It will remain as a glittering precious jewel that sits alone, forever out of reach.
And Hyouka is now the best argument in favor of fansubs, for without fans subbing it, none of us non-Japanese speakers would ever have been able to watch it and fall gobsmacked in love with it.

@ wastrel - if it's any consolation, there have been a number of times I thought, "ah, that title will never get licensed" only to be proven happily wrong. Supposedly, Legend of the Galactic Heroes was an absolute impossiblity due to rights issues ... and Sentai got it. I never thought Skip Beat! would get a release ... and then a Pied Piper Kickstarter came along.
...
But mainly you HAVE to be wrong because not ever owning a Hyouka release is UNTHINKABLE for me.

As the universe takes great delight in proving me wrong over and over, it may yet happen.
But, uh, it's not like I'm trying to reverse-psychology the universe into getting Hyouka licensed in order to prove me wrong again. No, that's far too subtle an approach for little ol' me to try to do. Nope, not me. *whistles innocently*
