IT'S A GUNDAAAAAM!
Even the merchandise uses the Gundam reference for the two of them.

Anybody who has 900 dollars to spend on a collectible mug probably doesn't care too much about what it cost. For whatever reason, they felt like they had to have it, and that what's worth $21 to the average consumer is worth over $900 to them.
Nobody ever said that being an Otaku was a cheap hobby. That's why I'm not surprised that someone -- presumably a Detective Conan fan -- has a lot of disposable income. Let's hope that these 900 dollar mugs bring someone happiness.

That guy who bought the S. Akai/T. Amuro mugs at $964 must have had plenty of cash in his wallet at the time.

Owning something official that is limited feels nice.
Though for it to not be limited after you bought it for a high price... that has to sting.

Had the fan not bought the mugs in the first place, the company may never have realized the demand for them, never seeing a reason to produce more. So the fan either buys them and prompts the company to make more, or doesn't buy them and they stay limited but he/she doesn't get to have them. That's like a textbook example of 'damned if you do, damned if you don't.'

To a lesser extent, the other 149 winners of those mugs. The point of these mugs originally is to have something that only a few of which were ever made. To have them become available to anyone later on would make the winners feel slighted, I'm sure.
