I have a question for those who would be kind to answer Shonen is the translation of boys in Japanese right so bear with me RWBY is an all female cast mainly all shojo, so how does that fit to shonen jump since it's geared to male readers. It could be because that's english shonen jumps only successful publication and they just want to gain more readers by including RWBY?

Hmm, that's a good question!
Well, first off, the RWBY manga was serialized in Ultra Jump in Japan. Ultra Jump is part of the Shueisha family so it's not that far of a stretch for it to be in Shonen Jump over here.
Also the manga-ka of the manga, Miwa Shirow, is known for his seinen works. So his style is already geared towards male readers ... although the RWBY adaptation is probably not as violent as his other work, Dogs - Bullets & Carnage.
This last part is just my personal opinion but I think just because it's shonen doesn't mean it can't have a female-lead or a female-dominated cast. RWBY is particular has many qualities that one would find in shonen manga - action, battles, passion, friendship, personal growth in the face of adversity. The girls of RWBY can kick butt and I think both male and female readers of Shonen Jump can appreciate that!

I would say it's because RWBY doesn't fall into the typical shoujo genre. It is first and foremost an action series, with spectacular battle choreography, imaginative weaponry, and a plethora of (bloodless) fantasy carnage when it comes to the Grimm. Meanwhile, it builds its characters well so people who are drawn to a character-driven story may find things to love in that. So I think while it DOES star four girls, it also deals with hopes, dreams, and teamwork--all staples of the shounen playbook.

Shounen manga means that the manga's demographics is typically meant for young male audience, while Shoujo is for young female demographics, and not that the main characters are male or female. Yes, RWBY Features female leads, but it would typically be placed in the Shounen genre.
Though I'm sure plenty of women watch RWBY. It's just a genre title.

"Shounen" and "Shoujo" refer to the target audience, not the characters in the show/manga. And even then it's not uncommon for manga that target both men and women to be published in "Shounen" magazines (like for example, One Piece, which has a very diverse readership in Japan).

Was this the most successful troll on ann forums ever, or really just a non-native speaker asking a naive question? The world will never know!

While yes, "shounen" does translate to "boy(s)", that doesn't mean that it has to feature boys. Shonen Jump is a male-targeted manga magazine, focusing on action series. And boys like RWBY just as much as girls do, and it certainly has enough action.

Semantics aside, the RWBY manga is currently running on Shueisha's Ultra Jump magazine in Japan. Although the various manga in that magazine are technically aimed towards the seinen audience, like Weekly Shonen Jump and Jump SQ., they are all published from Shueisha.
RWBY is not exactly Shonen, but Viz Media has ran plenty of manga in their English Shonen Jump magazine that were not technically from Weekly Shonen Jump since back when the magazine was monthly and still in print anyway. And they still do, so it's kinda pointless to split hairs about it.

It is nice to see Viz Jump branch out to include titles from more of the Jump family magazines.

I had no idea it had taken off in Japan in such a big way. Guess the Japanese dub was a success then.

I'd say it was seeing who they cast in it: Saori Hayami (Ruby), Ami Koshimizu (Yang), Aya Suzaki (Nora), Shizuka Ito (Pyrrha), Megumi Han (Penny), Kazuhiko Inoue (Ozpin). Kikuko Inoue (Salem), Ayako Kawasumi (Winter), and Hiroaki Hirata (Qrow) among others.

I hope that one day,the "RWBY" series will be shown on television. I'd like to see it there. I also hope the manga shows up here as well,I'd like it. As for the show's success in Japan,it doesn't seem that surprising. It's inspired by anime so it's no big surprise that it would have some success in the land of the rising sun.
