Based on the Anime Fests I've gone to it seems like there are more anime fans 18+.

I had talked to you earlier, and you had made the comment that college students were adults, verus high school students who were kids. Is that the distinction that you're going by? Because at conventions, 17 year old high school kids are hard to tell apart from 18, 19 year old college students.

Besides, just one convention isn't a good way of assessing the fanbase for anime. You also can't forget to include all the fans that live outside the US, i.e. Japan. I think there's a strong fanbase for fans under 18, but the majority of the fans are, I'm pretty sure, 18+.

That might be true, but when you go to stores and comic shops, you usually don't see a grown up buying anime. You usually see kids. I admit there are adults that like anime, quite a few if i may add, but still kids are the ones that are the majority that watch anime like on fox, wb, tech tv, and cartoonnetwork.

Where are you even getting this statistic?

The reason why kids watch anime on Fox and the WB is because the anime aired on these stations were made for kids. You really can't base your claim that more kids watch anime than adults just on what you observe in your niche of the world. If you think that you'll be one of the rare few people that stay with anime past 18, you're in for a disappointment.

Well, actually distinguishing between children (12 & under), adolescent (13-21 approximately), and adult (22 & up), I'd say the adolescent crowd is probably the largest group, followed by children, and then adults.

Granted, I have nothing to back this up but regional observation and intuition...but...meh...two cents are two cents, ne? Laughing

Not true for my comic store, when I had one, I used to see many more adults than kids. I saw a poll thing the other day about ages...can't remember where...but the largest portions were 13-30 year.

Maybe ANN can run a quick poll and find out what the average age is? It would be somwhat isolated results, but still better than a comic store.

I'm not to sure Bobby's allowed to go the the great cartoon fest with 20 year old men/women. It's a simple fact of money, transportation, being alone, maturity. Of Course your anime fests are mostly 18+ with the skimming of incredibly irritaing teenagers. I guess I shouldn't be in highschool, huh?

"kids like us?"

Well, I'm not a kid. I'm 22 years old. I think you're assuming that if someone likes anime or animation that they must be younger individuals.

As far as the anime shows seen on the week ends (pokemon, yu gi oh etc.) a lot of kids watch them. But, keep in mind that there are a lot of series/movies out there that just aren't meant to be viewed by "kids". A lot of anime is meant for an older, more mature audience (and no, I'm not talking about hentai).

Yes.

If you want to be broad, Pokemon, Digimon and their ilk garner more 3-11 year-old ratings than any other anime show. Adult Swim and Toonami don't even come close. So, yeah, more "kids" watch Anime.

Going to an anime convention is, a lot of the time like going to a college university. Everyone is _young_, and therefore everyone is going to LOOK young. If you've never been to a university, go to one sometime, and just look at everyone around you. "Old" people look even older by comparison, because of all the youth around. By the time those students begin looking "middle-aged", they've already moved away, to the real world.

I agree with Nagisa -- instead of splitting the two between "under 18" and "19+", it would be better to split the group between "12 and under", "13-21" and "21+".

We need to disregard 12 and under because if you include them, they become the largest group, but they're not really the -fans- you're talking about. They just like watching whatever's on TV. They also aren't really targetted for DVD sales, nor do they participate in forums like this one.. the few that do usually are with permission from their parents, and (as some of you might recall) don't seem to turn out very well as posters.

It is correct to say that the 'average' aged fan lies in the "Adolescent" range of 13-21. In the 80s, the average anime fan was in their late 20s, which dipped to the early 20s by the 90s. As anime became more accepted by youth culture throughout the 1990s [SM and DBZ certainly helped] the average age continued to dip further. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if the average age is 17-18.

However, to find those people who are greater than 18 years old, you have to be near a college.. that's the most visible place where you'll see those 18+ adults.

This also, I think, says something about the permeation of anime in American culture; it's limited to where ideas and concepts can be exchanged. The prime areas to do that are at a University or at High School. Prior to that, there's little creativity in the educational system, nor are the students really ready to discuss things in a more serious manner. After the university, most people settle down into their own routine and don't really socially influence others, who have also become set in their routines.

This may change, now that anime is a TV staple.. because now you don't need to be near an educational place to learn about anime. Instead, you can flip to CN or Fox or WB and get an anime show.. but what's the outcome? Got me..

Kids, by a lot. Animation fandom in general (meaning all cartoons, not just Japanese ones) will never be more than a small niche market amongst North American adults, aside from a small number of comedies made specifically for the American audience, and, even then, only The Simpsons is a regular Nielsen Top 20 show.

Conventions are a terrible place to gauge popularity of things in general, since they attract the fans of any given thing from hundreds or thousands of miles around, while everyone else (re: non fans) in North America doesn't go to these conventions. You have a heavily-concentrated sample of fans at those things absolutely unrepresentative of the general population.

Back in my country,i get to know a lot of pple way past the age of 30s, 40s(not me) & some even in their 50s enjoy watching anime just as many younger anime fans do.i was unaware of that be4 i got to know them & surprisingly most of them are watching titles such as stellvia of e uni, gundam seed, full metal panic... & for what i know of, some of them have been watching animes 4 more than 20years & to them, anime is like a lifetime hobby even if they r married & have kids.sometimes they even joked that they now can shared the same hobby with their kids. From then onwards,i began 2 realise that anime can be watched by anyone, regardless of age.As for the question of whether anime is being watched by more adults than kids,i think u've 2 conduct a worldwide survey which i think is quite impossible.
NOTE:This does not apply to hentais & other titles which can only be watched at certain age

I'd say kids, I only know of two guys that are over 22 and watch anime. Kids don't have to really worry about paying taxes and stuff, so, they in general have more money to spend on anime and manga. For the kids 18-22, who haven't moved out or go to college, this also sort of applies to them. I can't really say though.
