Looks like the testers had fun, but I'm concerned about the full gesture controls. It means there is likely very little depth in the gameplay. While it will be very exciting and new at first, the VR experience does wear off in novelty. Immersive visuals is no substitute for good gameplay, the two must work together to make a good game.

No need to worry, this is just a testbed for VR tech with SAO as the demonstrator for interactiveness.
Real VRMMOs are at least a decade away. And I'm sure by then, they will have gameplay smoothed out where interacting with the environment would be much better. |

Still in alpha stages, I think the idea is brilliant. It will be the first step into a new way of gaming.
Some day someone will manage to mix all that technology into one machine and reduce the costs, I highly doubt that anyone can pay what this future game will require. I mean, just to test Oculus Rift was a lot and Sony just announced their VR set for almost 400 $... imagine how much it would be with this one. |

Just remember that in SAO the game is made in 2022. I will be impressed if the game becomes reality 6 years from now.

What is kind of sad is that this is already dated technology! The only thing that I saw that was current was the Leap of Motion hand tracker, otherwise it looked very good. It's just after getting the HTC Vive, I think it could be done with far less fuss! Still, given what they had, it was very good!

Interesting how that coincides with tonight's and next weekend's concerts: http://www.fictionjunction.com/index.html

Its great that they are at least trying to develop this technology. There is a chance to succeed if you try, but without trying there is no chance to succeed.

Give it a chance everyone! This is only Alpha after all - they're far from Beta testing it

I can see this being a reality in 4-5 years. I wish IBM would make this their first VR MMORPG for the world. Now that would be something. With their resources I can definitely see this happening.

Nice to see all the VR techs popping up but outside but we are still a long way off from having a real Nerve Gear.
BCI's will need another 8-10 years to get where we need it to have a really amazing game play experience, add another 2-3 years of development for a game devs to leverage it. Unless they are designed together which could happen, but either way 2026-2030 is probably when we really expect this. |

This is screaming "publicity stunt" at me.
Regardless, as a proof of concept, I think that whoever manages to make the first competent Skyrim-quality MMORPG that uses the same kind of immersive tech that was featured in the recent Tested - HTC Vive demo will wind up having a ton of interest from the gaming community. Honestly, I don't give a crap about walking around with my own legs and such, I'd be fine even sitting at a desk and using a controller, so long as I could see other people and felt (from a visual perspective) as if things were happening to me rather than an avatar. That's really all I want from VR. |

Unfortunately, you are actually correct. This entire SAO VRMMO thing is a massive publicity stunt for SAO (oh look SAO concert, oh look SAO movie) and IBM's Watson. It is not a real game, was never intended to be. This article says it better than I can: http://www.roadtovr.com/sorry-internet-the-sword-art-online-vr-mmo-isnt-real/ This was nothing more than a tech demo to show off IBM's Watson, some technologies put together, and to play as a fictional precipitating event for the SAO fictional world.
I think the Leap Motion is dated as well. That thing came out years ago, I have one, and honestly, while cool, could be greatly improved. |
