So Konami is doing it themselves? Probably not, but it would be nice.

There's too little information in this situation to deduce anything right now except the demise of the project. That being said, from what I'm getting, if they intend it to be a project with full permission from the rights holder, they're doing it in all the wrong order. You gotta talk with the licensing lawyers as early as possible, not only to avoid giving the impression that you're working on something outside of their permission, but also because a project that gets approval later will be under harsher scrutiny by the rights holders.

If it really was Konami that called for the shutting down of this fan-made project of Metal Gear Solid, then, as scummy as they are, they are allowed to do that. In any case, I wish the team the best of luck on their future ventures.

Ill never understand why people who do fan translation, remakes etc... announce their projects before they are complete. It pretty much ALWAYS leads to a C&D order and all their work pretty much was for nothing. Sure even if its finished a C&D can still be issued but once somethings released on the internet its impossible to ever remove it completely. I just don't get why after how many times its happened other project creators repeat and do the same thing.

About the Hayter tweet hopefully that means a remake for the original game is being made. With FF7, RE2 being remade why not complete it and have the trio of largest/popular games that all pretty much released at the same exact time all getting remakes Anime smile

They are in the legal right. They are in the moral right if they plan on actually doing something similar and this may cost them revenue. This was a harmless fan project otherwise and they could have just as easily left it alone.

Unless you are actively doing something to harm the "brand" or you are doing something which may impact sales of a competing product, it's ridiculous to shut down projects like this.

Konami probably doesn't want to set a precedent of leaving things like this unchallenged since it becomes a game of "why did you shut us down but not that other project".

Ahh how unfortunate I hope Konami follows up with their own version or bring those people in to work on it looks like it would be awesome.

Still this was a good opportunity for Konami to earn back some respect from it's fan-base, valve faced a similar issue with Black Messa project and they supported it.

I suppose it's possible that they decided that if they couldn't get approval from Konami by a certain point, they would drop it. It isn't at all surprising that they were unable to obtain approval. As the article stated, another group actually received approval to remake the first couple of games, and then Konami changed its mind shortly after. Considering that this project popped up after that, it seems rather unlikely Konami would have said anything other than, "No."

I would think it is because they are hoping that they can actually get approval before getting too far into the project. If they go through all the effort and release a finished project, they could end up sinking a lot of time and resources into it with only a lawsuit to show for their trouble. Generating some positive buzz beforehand might sway the owner to allow it, plus the owner wouldn't have much to claim in the way of possible damages from something that was never released and clearly only at the concept stage.

The marked difference between those games you mentioned and Metal Gear Solid is that MGS already has a remake (divisive as it is) if anything a lot of that effort would be better served remaking Metal Gear 1 & 2.
