I really love these characters designs. They're fresh, but at the same time something strikes me as... vintage or classic about them. Not sure why.

So did they just Leave AoT season 2 alone and skip to this story line? I knew AoT is coming out this year, and glad it moved out of Summer of Horror. but this looks better then the OG AoT

I think it would make sense so they can piggyback off of AoT's success. The broadcast dub would also be nice.

I can almost guarantee that this series will be disappointment
not only the concept, story, and characters are very similar to Shingeki no Kyojin's, but it also done by the same team that made Shingeki no Kyojin.
people will hype this because it's "Wit Studio anime", "original project from the team that brought you Attack on Titan", etc....
by the end of the season there's a big chance that no one will talk about this series again.
lesson learned from Owari no Seraph, God Eater, Aldnoah.Zero
I will still watch it, tho....
....to see if I'm right
I hope I'm wrong, but I doubt it.

A steampunk anime will do that to you. Almost like a Sakura Wars meets Samurai 7 kinda vibe.

Egoist! Yay!

This looks like an AOT clone, but if it's by the same studio and director (and has trains) it should be pretty good.

Apparently the original character designer for this show, Haruhiko Mikomoto, was the same character designer for a few of the original Macross titles as well as Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket. That may likely be why the character designs seem classic to you guys. As for why they feel fresh, I want to say that either the art director, Shinichiro Yoshihara, or the color designer, Ken Hashimoto, may play a part in the aesthetic you guys are getting. I personally think it's more of the latter because while both worked on Attack on Titan in the same positions, Ken Hashimoto also applied the overall color designs for Chihayafuru which gave similar bright and vivid but slightly watercolor vibes that the preview for this show is giving me.

Then again, I could way off in what I'm guessing since I'm merely trying to learn more about these things.

That's because the character designer behind them, Haruhiko Mikimoto, was responsible for designs on a number of vintage and classic anime, such as SDF Macross, Gunbuster, Gundam 0080, and Megazone 23. Wink [Edit: beaten a bit to it above ^]

The way the characters look are actually very much in the way Mikimoto does his designs nowadays (I'd even say they are dead-on, as Araki works often are). Over the years, an artist's style can vary and change in certain ways, and in the case of a number of veterans, their art can sometimes become smoother/less hard-edged and more colorful (often with a rainbow-like shimmer or said-watercolor feel), perhaps due to their adoption of digital paint and other computer-based utensils (as compared to the ink-and-paper of old). Yoshiyuki Sadamoto is another similar case of this.

Well yes maybe it will be a dissapointment but tastes are tastes.
I really liked Owari no Seraph the problem with it was that WIT changed a lot of things and didn't include everything from the manga,i am a fan of it and the anime made me buy all the volumes that were released in english and even the recent novel with Guren,i really like the story. Very Happy
