It doesn't help much that a lot of their CG is going into their porn.

Love this article. It's a subject I've been trying to learn more about for a while now.
When I saw the film adaptation of King of Thorn and saw there were major elements rendered in CG instead of being hand-drawn, I was dismayed for many of the reasons Justin highlighted: even some of the best examples of CG can have an Uncanny Valley feel to them, seeming to lack weight and substance when placed "inside" the traditionally-rendered world of the story. By and large I enjoyed that movie for a number of reasons--sound direction, musical score, and characters--but the CG monsters and other instances of computer-rendered animation weren't among them. Seeing the cell-shaded, more emotive look of some recent fighting games like Naruto Ninja Storm 4, have given me hope for improvement across the board. |

They still have ways to go,but they definitely improved since the first use of CGI in the Golgo 13 film .

high frame rate looks far worse. the tl;dr version of the answer is "to match the frame rate of the rest of the animation"

Is it foolish to hope for non-CG mecha for the new FMP! season? (^.^;)

I almost wanted to msg answerman to make a thread about this because jpn seems to be making more and more animes with CGI which doesnt mean good news for the future atleast in my eyes because it obviously still needs lots of work on it to make it atleast decent to watch but even so i still prefer the old animation over the CG and atm doing the whole anime with CG is just meh was also the main reason i dropped BBK/BRNK after episode 1. At this point its best to only have CG for a few scenes to save money and time but the rest should be done the normal way.
So if they want more money they need to start thinking to make animes more worldwide available because for now we got the big streaming sites yeh but for example 1 of them wont stream every anime that comes out that season but instead only a few so people are forced to buy subscription at multiple sites and also they are quite expansive by my standards, so yeh i hope jpn does some good choices in the future they shouldnt limit themself to the jpn market only they gotto spread out more. |

Honestly the thing that scares me the most about anime CG is the sales. The shows look awful, I can't bear to watch them even for a minute, yet in Japan they seem to love these shows for some reason. Arpeggio and Expelled from Paradise had big sales and I cannot wrap my head around it. That's what really concerns me.

You just had to squeeze in this jab for some reason, huh? You could've answered the whole thing without this choice paragraph.
Don't forget Sidonia no Kishi. Part of me thinks it's a combination of familiarity contemptness and Japan's inherent love affair with things Western. For the former, it's no question Japan is one of the last bastions of 2D animation, but for the natives who've been inundated with this time and time again it gets tiring. The same effect happened in the West. As for the latter, Japan loves Disney and Disney's been in the 3D game for awhile now. There's a "keeping up with the Joneses" pressure that's been lingering in within the industry which has led to more of these CG anime coming out more and more. |

What bothers me most, I think, about must CG is the shadows always look wrong (it's probably that if that was fixed something else like the motion would start bothering me more but...)
I don't know whether it is just a part of the toon shading, or whether that just need to implement something like subsurface scattering and aren't (for cost/time/technicsl reasons?) but the hard shadows on skin and fabric always look wrong (even if the shadow placement is presumably more accurate than hand drawn). |

Not just characters. If you look at walking scenes in slow motion, you'll often find that the character motions and the movement of the background occur in different frames. If you have stuff happening in the background too, or maybe an extra layer of foreground objects between the camera and characters, it's possible for every frame to be unique even though no one element is animated on the ones. |

Which is why I freak out when there's CG in idol anime, it often looks and performs terribly. I wouldn't mind automation doing a full CG anime but it seems like it's too expensive right now and while it may the CG look good it may not solve the framerate issues.

The frame rate in cel-shaded CGI anime definitely doesn't look very good. The character movement is so stiff that it's hard for me to watch. However, Pecola has a pretty good frame rate for a CGI anime.

Can you point me towards a CG anime with a high frame rate that looks bad? I'm honestly curious. I watched Knights of Sidonia's first season and I was often bothered by the low frame rate. I can't imagine how a higher frame rate would be worse. |

A 3D anime selling well is not necessarily because it's 3D. It just happens Arpeggio and Sidonia had source material which was well suited to both popular anime adaptions and CGI. Even as bad as Sidonia's characters looked it's hard to say either would have looked better overall on a 2D TV anime budget either unfortunately. Sidonia's atmosphere really depends on being able to include things like the weathering marks on all the human equipment because they only have to be textured once instead of drawn every frame and Arpeggio has an overwhelming number of typically 3D elements that would have looked much worse in a mixed production. The choice to do say, a romantic comedy in all 3D would be a lot harder to justify. |
