Wow, this is huge. I wonder what's going on behind the scenes. I've always heard all kinds of gossip about Johnny's.

Nothing official of course but there has been a power struggle over who will take over Johnny's after the founder and president of the agency either steps down or passes away. The two candidates were Julie, the niece of the current president or Iijima Mari, who was the main manager of SMAP and the one that helped get them the breaks they needed to become as famous as they are. Julie's mother and vice-president, Mary, has been rather vocal about dissing Iijima and propping up her daughter in the past year or so.
The latest news is that Iijima has resigned and so the four that have been said to be leaving the agency are going with her. It's going to be interesting to see what comes of this as Iijima is well connected so Mary may not be able to bully her and the members of SMAP that are leaving into obscurity easily. |

It's not like they can get four new guys to just team up with Kimutaku. Something is really fishy here that they would just up and out like this. SMAP grows money on trees, so if it is an internal power struggle, they and the fans certainly have the power to move things.

Well, check out the Wikipedia article for Johnny Kitagawa.
I mean, the court decided that the skeevy parts of allegations were true, so... ? I don't know what these guys personally experienced, but I could understand them bolting on Johnny when the opportunity arose. |

"The band debuted with their first single in September 1991, and went on to sell 2.5 million single CDs throughout their career."
Maybe it's because I'm French, but I don't understand this sentence. They sold over 35 million CDs, isn't 2.5 million way too low? Did you mean 2.5 million per CD? (that would be wrong too). Anyway, please be careful with the numbers. |

@ruze, I think it's trying to say 2.5million is what one of their CD-Singles individually sold? (Wikipedia has something to this effect for SMAP's Sekai ni Hitotsu Dake no Hana, which is apparently the 9th-best selling single (as of a 2008 list) on Oricon charts). Other singles and full album sales would be in addition to that, for a combined 35million overall. It was worded unclearly here, I agree.

Y'mean Michi Iijima. Mari Iijima is Lynn Minmay. ... sudden resignation of the group’s manager, a 58-year-old woman who has been in charge of the group almost since its formation in 1988. The manager is thought to be Michi Iijima, though her name and presence have been shrouded in mystery for decades, appearing in news simply as “SMAP’s manager.” |
