Sadly, they didn't compare that with Xbox sales.

Is it doing better than the PS3 over the same period of time?

Without a doubt. It's comparable with the PS2's sales of the same time frame and exceeding them. The PS2 is still the most sold console of all time with about 155 million units sold worldwide.
Only time will tell if any console, PS4 included, will ever exceed the PS2's record.

Well yeah. Christmas just happened.
I still have my Xbone, so I still will wait for the next price drop. I do want to play Shenmue III...

Wont ever happen again. Back in the PS2 era Sony had no real competition whatsover. The PS2 was released in 2000 while MS first released the first xbox and Nintendo released the gamecube in 2001. Sony had a huge advantage, alot major exclusive titles they created from the PS One era they used for the PS2. While the xbox was new and only had Halo as a real systemseller. Gamecube only failed because it pretty much sucked as a console lol. Another reason is why no console ever will sell that much again is that the life cyclus of a console generation is much shorter.

I'd say that money was to ensure the service stays up and running much like live with the 360 and One......but that'd be rather awkward in light of recent circumstances.

Well it's not like a lot of people are rushing out to buy them around these parts so it makes sense.

By that same harsh logic the original Xbox must've had the same problem as it sold around that same amount as the Gamecube.

I don't believe that alone would make it improbable for any system to break the PS2's record. Especially since consoles don't stop selling until demand dries up significantly or until the company elects to stop manufacturing them altogether.

I must say this is an impressive amount of sales for Sony, assuming they push for a 10 year generation (5-6 seems more realistic) it should easily surpass the PS3/Xbox for sales.
As for the Vita 4 million sales isn't great but I think it may have some life left in it (especially if they do another price cut) a number of people I've talked to myself included are thinking 'of grabbing one. Lots of games are being sold for it but stores just don't seem to carry them, granted a few more first party titles would be nice to see.

that's because the Vita managed to be even worse then the PSP, and being worse then the PSP is saying something (Sony stick to home consoles)

I looked at getting a Vita, then I realised that once you'd brought a reasonable memory card and carrying case. it was only about £20 cheaper than a PS4. So I went for the PS4...
