I'm going to have to disagree with rating Wixross as perishable. I found it quite enjoyable, and I very eager for Funimation to release the second season so I can keep watching what I found to be a surprisingly good dub. I prefer dubs anyway, but this one stood out. I actually found Jamie Marchi's performance to be the one I liked most in the whole show.
On a different note, does anybody happen to know why the SAVE release of Good Luck Girl is DVD only? I see that Eureka Seven AO is a combo pack, so maybe Funi wasn't allowed to include the blu-ray for the SAVE release? What I'm concerned about is that given the discounted price on the SAVE versions, maybe they've decided that the blu-ray is too expensive. I suppose it would add quite a bit of incentive for people to buy the first release since they might miss out on the blu-ray otherwise. Normally, I buy the first release, as I did with Good Luck Girl, but I am curious to know if this is going to be standard policy going forward. |

Yeah I'm definitely going to have to disagree with the Wixoss review. It doesn't really borrow ideas directly, it borrows themes. But the way it goes about it is really quite different than Madoka Magica. It's probably one of my favorite series from the year it came out. Plus it does have some generally creepy moments that still stand out in my mind.

I mostly agree with the Wixoss review, both with the cliffhanger ending making me feel like I wasted hours of my time instead of making me want to watch a second season, and the fact that all these card battles weren't interesting at all. I think the main character had potential (iirc the season hinted at some kind of weird past that caused her to become somewhat jaded as she is in the beginning of the show), but everyone else went from boring to awful.

The thing with Ruko is that she's conflicted over actually enjoying the game even when she knows what could potentially happen. It's interesting how a show promoting a card game is saying that it's actually a bad thing to enjoy it.

The thing with a card game anime is that usually they "make stuff up" like a generic sports anime (or original series yu gi oh) or would have to be text book accurate ala Cardfight Vanguard (which then means you can end up with multiple episodes for one match), by abridging the experience the focus is shifted to motivation of the characters. If the audience doesn't like the characters, whelp I guess them the breaks. But just as well we live in a world that a significant portion of the audience thought that Homura was some how WAY more noble of motivation than what we got within the original run of Madoka Magica spoiler[and her "turning evil" was somehow a surprise/betrayal of character in Rebellion.] I still consider Wixoss significantly under appreciated and certainly there exists an audience that would dig the hell out of the show if they saw it. |

Little girl being slowly dragged into something that seems like light hearted fun at first but turn increasingly hostile as you slowly unravel a dark sinister side of it, but they go on because they were promised a wish? I'd say its quiet the opposite, it directly borrow idea but change the themes. That collection is pretty impressive, even store usually carry less stuff. Also, someone has a big basement. |

Can we stop comparing every single show where teenage girls do vaguely-sinister supernatural things to a show that "stole" its best plot twist from Sasami: Magical Girls Club?
This isn't just because I consider Wixoss to be a better show than Madoka. Different strokes for different folks and all that, and I get that lots of people consider Madoka God's gift to anime or whatever. I'm just sick of every review of every magical girl show ignoring that Madoka's story, imagery, characters, themes, etc. were built on dozens of existing works, while criticizing newer shows for doing the same thing. |

Yeah, I'm another viewer that actually thought WIXOSS was a great show in my opinion (but nowhere near as good as Madoka).
As for the cliffhanger, I actually liked how they continued into the second season. It seems like the show is going to change into something a lot more repetitive and standard, but then instead goes back to being the show that I liked from the first batch of episodes. |

Yeah count me as another one who greatly disagrees with the rating WIXOSS got.
I actually liked the cliffhanger ending, as it made me interested in the second half. Of course I won't be buying this release, I'll be waiting for the inevitable release containing both halves. |

I'm going to have to add my voice to the others in saying that I don't regard WIXOSS as anything close to being Perishable. The reviewer is, of course, welcome to give it whatever rating he wishes, but I found the series to be a pretty good one (I think I rated it Very Good). While it certainly has similarities with a certain other dark Magic Girl series, I'd say that they are similarities only: I don't think WIXOSS is ripping PMMM off directly.

I honestly feel like the Wixoss review is pretty fair; this isn't by any means the worst 'let's put cheerful young women through horrible psychological tortures' show (I'm looking in your direction, Brynhildr...) but it's a genre that's already distressingly overcrowded and what I saw of Wixoss didn't feel like it did anything sufficiently interesting or distinguishing to really stand out. I can easily see how someone could imprint on this series (having done somewhat the same myself with My-HiME in the pre-streaming everywhere days) but it's not the sort of thing that feels like it will or should have any long-term impact.
On an entirely different note, though, does anyone know anything about this Night on the Galactic Railways release? The old review mentions some serious issues with the print and/or transfer and it'd be great to get even a microreview of this release's quality from anyone who might've seen it. I'd love to add this to my collection. Thank you! |

Honestly, we're getting to a point where I just can't take a reviewer that pulls the "Madoka rip off" stuff seriously anymore. It's like when everyone would compare every difficult game to Dark Souls, even if they had nothing else alike aside from the difficulty.
I don't disagree that WIXOSS isn't the strongest series, especially the second season, but it honestly doesn't rip off much from anything. Unless you count themes and such as something that can be ripped off, which frankly you shouldn't. |

Well, it looks like there is no point in ever sending in pics of my shelfs after seeing your badass collection. Very impressive. I would think those are customs shelfs. You know your collection has gotten too big when you have to get your shelfs custom made. Im not there yet and will probably never be. Lol.
Ps. I've never seen Madoka so sue me. Since thats the case I thought WIXOSS was awesome by the way. |
