^ LOL. Tell that to all the people that are being released from death row and normal prisons decades later when evidence is being found of their innocence. But that's another topic...

WHAT THE HELL? I'm so confused by this. Did he know what they were doing with the books? More info is needed on this part... I can't imagine a normal delivery man would get arrested. But the world is crazy

Its all about the money for these companies.
This is why I always buy my manga used instead of paying full price.
If I want to buy & read their manga, I want to buy it as cheap as possible.

@Kougeru

There is an earlier article. The deliveryman was supposed to be delivering the manga to stores in advance of the release date. He stole one or more copies and sold them to unauthorized individuals. This allowed them to scan and upload the episodes prior to the actual release of the manga magazines. So, yeah, he was arrested for doing something illegal.

Seems weird for Viz Media to be talking about arrests in Japan. It's like they are making a veiled threat to western manga fans.

Arrests are being made in Japan all the time. They have no impact in the west. So for Viz Media to be making press statement about it, would imply there is a purpose for it.

Perhaps a purge is coming.

I had always thought that uploaders would be cautious and cease uploading copyrighted works from powerful companies, but it appears I was mistaken.

It's not like its difficult to come across One Piece translations, so I don't know what motivates someone to upload that series so often.

It's good to see Japan cleaning up this problem. It might be a sisyphean task to be rid of it completely, though.

Always make sure to support the creators; whether you use scanlation sites or not. This is all good news, it is illegal after all.

Of course it's all about the money, these are businesses, not charities. The authors are also expecting to get paid for their work. And it's fine if you want to buy used, but the people selling it are in it for the money, too. Plus none of the money from second-hand sales finds its way back to the creators.

Made me giggle. My unfinished (likely never to be finished) collections of Gintama, Reborn and Strawberry 100% show you're not quite that committed Viz.

From what it sounds like, The delivery man was arrested because he did not deliver all of the books to where they were supposed to go instead handing some off/selling some to the pirates (ex: stealing from his employers) making him an accomplice to a crime. But yeah, I'd like more into on that too. They could just be holding him while investigate whether he was involved or not.

Seems like we'll be returning to the dark ages of manga fandom in the West, hearing rumors of the latest developments in our favorite stories and making hundreds of online fan fiction just to pass the time. Rolling Eyes

Or not... One Piece is available as part of Weekly Shonen Jump for 99 cents and The Seven Deadly Sins is simulpubbed for free on Crunchyroll.

You don't have to read it illegally if you want to read it week by week, you're being lazy/cheap/immoral...

I see Viz's announcement as more of "it can -- and might -- happen in the West, too" more than anything else.
