A divorce! Is that rare in Japan? The culture suggests it is, but then again, if you just look at North American Christianity, you'd think divorces in North America would be rare too (but it isn't).

According to Wikipedia, Japan's divorce rate is 36%. Compared to Belgium's 71%, the US's 53%, and the UK's 47%, Japan seems better at keeping its marriages afloat, but I wouldn't say that divorce is uncommon. A lot of countries in the lower end of the spectrum are also countries with restricted freedom due to religious or political influence, e.g. Libya's divorce rate is 5%. Countries with strong religious ties, but not necessarily oppressive laws, like Ireland, also rank low. |

Rather than relying on religion, marriages in Japan rely on social constructs. Even if a marriage is not going well, it is expected by society for couples to stay together. On the other hand, there are plenty of geinojin (stars) who probably don't announce their divorce (or even their marriage) in order to avoid controversy. |

More senior partners uncoupling - The phenomenon of “jukunen rikon,” divorces by couples age 50 or over, who have lived together for 25 years or more, has been showing marked growth since the start of the new century. Japan enters the age of silver divorces - experts predict that the retirement, over the next two and half years, of more than 7 million men belonging to the post-war baby boomer generation, together with recent legal change entitling women to up to half of their ex-husband's pension, will prompt a slew of divorce proceedings involving middle-aged couples.
