He doesn't really resemble Batou, but whatever, I don't really have high hopes for this movie to begin with.
Also the plot description for the movie is awful.

I approve. I think he'll do a great job as Batou. And a huge hell yeah to them doing "The Laughing Man" story! SAC was the best adaptation, after all.

Ghost in the Shell follows a female special ops cyborg who leads an elite task force called Section 9 for Hanka Robotics. Section 9 is devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, led by The Laughing Man whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka's advancements in cyber technology. |
WTF?. I have no hopes for this to begin with, but wow. This is gonna taint the franchise the way that DBZ movie did to DBZ.

I don't see why people talk as if that DBZ movie was worse thing ever. I thought it was a forgettable bad movie. It's not hilariously bad like the Fist of the North Star film, which makes the DBZ movie look like an Oscar winner.
This is probably going to end up being forgettable action schlock.

Definitely not feeling it. These guys are determined to make this adaptation embarrassing.

Section 9 working for Hanka? It's Public Security (or Public Peace in the SAC timeline, which this is supposedly following if the Laughing Man is involved). This already reeks of unfaithfulness to the source material.

Hmm, I wasn't really interested until I heard they're doing the Laughing Man story. That news actually got me kind of excited for this.

The synopsis is brief, but the mention of "The Laughing Man" is kind of encouraging! Now to see if the Laughing Man character and his scenario will bear any resemblance to that of the anime/manga, or at least have some semblance of thematic complexity that doesn't disregard the nuance that GitS is well known for.

So in other words, it won't taint it? As far as I can tell, the live-action Dragonball film didn't have any discernible effect on people's perceptions of the shonen property. At worst, it feels like one ugly footnote, hardly one worth mentioning in the larger franchise conversation.
This has a stronger production team behind it, at least. With Dreamworks, Scarlet Johansson, and the writer of Straight Outta Compton aboard, I think there's a greater chance of it being at least decent.

This may not be the case. I thought similarly at first, but looking at the synopsis again, it seems it could be interpreted as "Section 9 is doing work *for* Hanka Robotics." I.e. Hanka Robotics may be more of a client or 'victim' than an overhead employer.

Well its not really made for anime fans but for the general public. They probably just use the premise and put their own spin into it. Its to early to judge a movie without even seeing the trailer or some pictures of the characters in action.

Agree with you on TLM arc. My favorite by far. I just hope this adaptation surprises everyone in a good way. *fingers crossed*

Eh, he might work as Batou. I don't really know the guy. His face shape seems roght at least.
I'm a bit skeptical as to how they'll do Laughing Man.
1. They might make him a manaical terrorist who symply laughs a lot.
2. Even if they do keep him as a mysterious internet anonymous, the plot might end up as laughable as that SVU videogame episode.

Anyone not named Ron Perlman playing Batou is a disappointment

Unlike The Last Airbender, which forever ruined the cartoon's clout for most people who didn't know the franchise before the movie brought it toi their attention.

I certainly hope so! The Major shouldn't be working for a private company.

tfw Oshii's GitS and SAC were both unfaithful to the source and have so far overshadowed it. Changing the setting doesn't automatically kill the movie.

I'm not familiar with the actor at all, but I guess he could pull off batou, just give him the cyber eyes and we're all set, lol.

While it's cool they're doing the Laughing Man story I suspect it's going to end up being #2. Oh well, as a big GITS fan I'm gonna see this anyway so I'll set my standards low.

The movies were always more Oshii than Shirow but SAC was very faithful to the manga. Many parts of SAC come straight from the manga.
