I saw this at Best Buy today, didn't pick it up though, as I was looking for either Planetes or Gunbuster (Planetes was not in stock however) and a gift for my brother's 18th birthday (I settled on the Gravion/Gravion Zwei thinpack for him). BB was selling KPM DVD 3 for only $19.99 though, which made it hard to pass up.
Anyway, I'm very happy to hear that not much as changed in terms of what makes this series great. I'm sure when I do eventually buy this volume I'll be quite satisfied with it. KPM is easily one of my favorite releases this year when it comes to anime I haven't already seen via fansubs, despite the fact that Le Chevalier D'Eon has been pulling away from KPM by leaps and bounds in that department. |

I think the AoD review said this volume was a bit uneven, but after seeing it, I'd say this disc was pretty good. The English dub's improved a bit imo, and that "passing of a minor character" was well-done. And like you, Jedi General, I didn't see this in fansubs either -- I wasn't even DLing fansubs back when this aired, I just started buying it because I heard all the forum chatter wondering "Where's Kurau?" and figured there must be something good about it to warrant all that attention.

I must say that Kurau is simply amazing. I haven't enjoyed a Bones productions this much since the equally elegant Wolf's Rain. Even though Mars Daybreak, Eureka 7 and Fullmetal Alchemist are fun, they lack the pacing and refinement of the older Bones work in lieu of more shounen action. There is something rather poetic and melencholy about the older Bones shows which I rather miss. Granted we have seen the sf fugitive plot used in everything from Zone of the Enders (which I also love) to Solty Rei, but somehow the atmosphere here is unique.
One thing about this series that bothers me ( along with Gundam and many other sf series) is the 1G environment on the moon. This is one of those details that made Planetes really cool, but most series tend to ignore it. I will also agree on the amazing OST for this series. I love how the ED song sometimes kicks in a few verses early with the instrumental version. The insert song is also very fitting. Overall 2007 has been an amazing year for ADV, especially compared to their weak catalog from 2006. PS Jedi General, I'm really sad that you ended up buying Gravion over Planetes or Gunbuster. Best Buy really needs to keep the good stuff in stock! |

That's putting it mildly. I more or less with Theron, though. It is refreshing to see an anime released over here that doesn't wring out tragedy and pathos to force the audience to feel sorry for the (female) characters. And as usual Bones delivers on the technicals aspects of the series. Haven't listened to the English dub since the first disc, though. I generally can't tolerate Greenfield's direction and, to a lesser extent, scripting, and Kurau is no exception. |
