I've seen this happen enough to assume the answer, but is it a common practice in Japan to hold off on publicly announcing a marriage until after the ceremony/registration takes place? Or is it something that's generally limited to celebrities and other public figures?

So he finally made the announcement. Congrats!

It was actually kind of known for a while now that he's been married because in one of the photos for the Durarara!! radio show back in August, it showed him with a ring on his left ring finger. Shortly after it was put up, the staff took down the show (and the photo) for certain "circumstances" and then later reuploaded it with a shopped photo. Of course fans had already noticed and were quick to point things out.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing him perform at OrePara this year!

It's probably a public figure thing.

Was about to mention the ring scandal for the Durarara radio. It was pretty known by the community that he was probably married. Lol

This makes me wonder how often seiyuu keep their marriages a secret before they reveal it to the public...I'm starting to think it's pretty common considering all the marriage news I've read on the site.

Congratulations to Toyonaga-san and his wife, I wish them nothing but happiness Very Happy.

Kind of sad when having a private life can be considered a "scandal."

It is very common. For some people, their bachelorhood is a selling point.

Blame the fans who think an idol marrying is a crime equivalent to murder or drug possession and the agencies that enable this unhealthy and repulsive behavior.

We sometimes have a similar horror in the West if a celebrity pairs up with someone the fans weren't "shipping" them with. They'll shred the significant other on social media and send them death threats. The only difference of course is that companies don't encourage it.
