How often do Japanese anime releases get subs in English? Is it really weird for that to happen?

Maybe 1 or 2 series per season seem to have subtitles. So, not very many at all, unfortunately.
I preordered this as soon as WTK posted this in the thread this morning! It's always exciting when a JP set gets subs. And even better when it happens to be a show you are really interested in.

If they can put more english sub releases into each series that air per season it will encourage more buysers from the west to buy them..at least those who can afford it. Hell even a small amount of income from westerners can have an effect on each series sales and make a series even more succesfull.

Yeah, the less money going to another middleman, the better for the anime's success.

I've spent a couple thousand on Anime DVDs/Bluray, so if Japan starts having English subs in their releases, they'll have my money.
Provided the subs are good and not Engrish or dumbed down, bonus if they have translation notes.

Pretty much every modern Bandai Visual release has English subs.

Those are nice additions for the home-media release.

Really happy with what Bandai Visual are doing and I hope other JP distributors will follow.
Gonna check out the first episode in a few mins and see if it's PO-worthy .

I've got a few JP imports and the only one that have been flawed is the Mononoke Hime BD from Ghibli. I can't remember which it was, but one letter is uppercase throughout the entire movie. Other than that the subtitles on the JP imports I have are fine. No Engrish or dumbed down subtitles.

For the prices they charge, I think it'd be better if they put 4 eps. to a volume.

But not all. Celestial Method (Sora no Method) did not, more's the pity.
Love Live! fortunately did, and I've gotten the first season on Japanese Blu-Ray, and will get the second season as well over the next few months. I have the movie on pre-order already.
I bear the North American licensing companies no ill will at all: their products are usually fine and more often these days really great. For most shows I'm more than happy to wait for the North American version to come out. But there are shows that I'm (ahem) enthusiastic about, that I will get the Japanese version if it has English subtitles.
It's pretty easy these days for non-Japanese to order pretty much any physical video product that is produced in Japan (thank you Google and Bing translate!). I don't know if the additional overseas sales are enough to make producing the English subtitles profitable for them, but I bet they're watching such sales to see if it's worth continuing.

I preordered the Love Live movie. Never ordered from Japan before and I've been curious about a couple of things.
1. Are the subs a weird style or color like sentai's yellow subs?
2. Is the text for the menus in English or at least English speaking friendly?

I have spent even more than that on anime, and at least as much on gaming, but I am not going to pay for 6 volumes at 50-60 bucks a pop for a 12 episode series.
Especially when sentai has already licensed it.

But are they usually well done with proper spelling and grammar and such? That's what I'd need to know.

I'll always get the NA version of anime when given the choice as I'm a dub person first but if this does because a trend it would be great. While a large margin of anime does get licensed in NA many still don't and for the few series that fall into that I HATE having to watch something I don't own. Secondly since many titles aren't dubbed in NA and don't receive any fancy LE, if it's a favorite series of mine I might want to get the fancy jpn releases instead.
All in all I see no real downside, the NA market isn't going to be affected in any real way due to people already complain about aniplex prices let alone jpn prices and this gives a chance (if it ever becomes the norm) for collectors or fans of unlicensed shows to get them too. Now if only Japan would start adding subs to the plethora of games and VN's that will never ever leave Japan

The problem with your theory is that this is licensed, and pretty much all of the shows that get released in Japan with subs are the major shows that will get licensed. So I find it unlikely that this will become a common enough practice that some of the more obscure shows that don't get licensed get English subs.
