I"ll get down to the point. I have noticed a lot of award winning and very popular manga either contains lots of fan service and or a lot of violent material. The series Parasyte comes to mind when I think of violent material and this series is popular and it won an award. Love Hina contains a lot of fan service and is very popular. Then we have series like Basilisk and Monster that contains violence and nudity, and these series are have other awards behind them.
Yeah, I know these series also have very good writing and story telling with excellent art in them, but is all this violence and ecchi/hentai material necessary to make them great? Maybe, maybe not. Either way, it can't but make you wonder about that. Oh yeah... I"m a fan of The Drifting Classroom, Dragon Head, Monster, Negima, and Love Hina so I'm not saying I"m against any of that material, it just makes me think. I also would be a fan of Parasyte, but the amount of blood and gore makes my stomach sick and that's the truth! |

I don’t really think so. I think the only thing a makes a good manga (and it’s true for any sort of literature) is that it needs to have a good story. Violence and ecchi can be added to help back the story up, but that doesn’t mean that you need violence and ecchi in order to have a good manga. Look at some of the manga on the top ten; there are good stories out there that don’t have lots of violence or fan service.

Look at Aria and others like it. I think those are the best manga available, but they're certainly not as well known as manga like Love Hina.

Fruits Basket doesn't contain that much fanservice, as in the extreme sexual kind like you find in Ikki Tousen or Love Hina, and not much violence. Sure there is some in both categories but they're also handled much more tastefully then many other mangas. Those aspects don't dominate the manga, they're side notes more or less. The drama is what really carries it. So there's one example that doesn't have a lot of fanservice and violence/gore/blood in it.

The answer is for the most part discussed by other posters but I'll chime in. You don't absolutely need that kind of material to make a good manga. In a way it adds light to the series to get it noticed. But, even though you can present a good story, depending upon how you present the violence or ecchi material involved with the storyline could also determine whether your manga will be a big hit or not. For example, if you take a look at the violence presented in various series such as Berserk, Hellsing, Ichi the Killer, and Battle Royale, the style of the violence could be an element to make the reader want to dive more into the series. ESPECIALLY when you're looking at Ichi the Killer. It is considered to be a hit and possibly has cult status, but it's bad enough where it has been banned in various parts of Japan.

Most (but not all: see Fruits Basket) popular manga probably have one or both of these elements, but there are plenty of 'good' manga that don't have either one. But 'good' is largely subjective, so what I may consider 'good' manga with no violence or ecchi may simply prove to someone else that they are a necessary component for a 'good' manga to them.

I'm sure there's plenty of good manga out there that don't have a lot of violence and ecchi material in them. I wouldn't say that violence is necessary for a good manga series, but I think sometimes violence can make a story stronger, if that makes sense. I'm not sure ecchi can do much to help though. Well, maybe it could a manga more popular.
Also, I don't think ecchi and hentai are quite the same thing.  Isn't ecchi just perverted and fanservicey? Hentai would have to be actual porn.

To our standards that would be correct. Hentai over there though is actually ero-anime or ero-manga. |

No, not at all are either of those required for a manga to be good.
But that's not to say that having them will keep me from buying them. Matter of fact that's the type of thing I look for in a manga when I'm shopping for something new to read. If I see a guy getting his head cut off in a very violent fasion and on the next page I see a half naked to full naked girl in a manga, then I just found a new manga to buy. |

I think it really depends on the story. Sometimes some sex and violence is needed to tell what is being told, though it still needs to be handled well to make a manga be what I would call "good." But certainly not all "good" manga has lots of sex and violence. Most of the stuff I read, which is good at least by my definition, doesn't have much violence in it and sex scenes are generally PG-13.

No, I don't believe them to be, but I do believe that having that content in your work might catch more attention, and thats why it's been done perhaps overly so in some works.

Well, technically "ecchi" is just the Japanese pronunciation of the letter "H" and is an abbreviation of the word "hentai", but your definition is what has generally become the distinction between the two over years of usage. |

Do we even need to discuss this? Would anyone ever ask "Do you need violence and T&A to make a great movie?" Why would a storytelling medium like comics be any different?
