Viz's anime usually has changed openings, but for an anime as popular as Death Note, I doubt they would change it, due to angry fans. But when they do the second arc, what will they do to the opening? If they translate it, they would have to put in the F-word which is repeated multiple times. And if they leave it without subtitles, that would make fans annoyed as well. Anyway, my question is how have other anime companies coped with this problem? And has Viz's subbed version reached the second arc yet? If so what did they do.

I can imagine them simply editing the translation where necessary to avoid dropping the F-bomb. If I recall correctly, they also did that a couple times with the manga.

I don't have a lot of knowledge about the DVDs but my thoughts is that there's a chance that they will change it just by looking at the lyrics. As some of us know, Death Note is going to be airing on YTV later this fall and the station is pretty strict with things such as course language. The only word that I hear most of the time is bastard. I'm hoping that they will leave in the original second opening and just censor the F word like they would do with music videos. One thing that I hope people won't do is mistake the word ningen for some other derogatory term.  Imagine all the ruckus just because of a misunderstanding.

They could subtitle the OP, or put in a disclaimer that makes clear that ningen means human.

There are curse words in the Japanese language that are equivalent to the f-word and I haven't yet seen any company that edited them in their DVD releases -just translating them to something different in the subtitles which I expect to happen for the second opening in the DVD release, as for when the series is being aired on TV, they will definitely shorten the opener by skipping the sequences where the word is used.

I call BS. As far as I know there aren't any words in Japanese that could be considered anywhere near as offensive as the f-word used to be. And there aren't many Japanese curse words that can be used as a universal descriptor like the F-word can. If there are please feel free to prove me wrong.

I'm pretty sure they aren't going to censor it on the DVD. There's no reason to ever censor something on DVD. On TV, however, it's a different story. I don't know YTV's policies, but I know AS has been known to skip OP sequences altogether.

I believe there is a more polite way to express that you don't agree with me  and I don't think ANN would allow me to list those words in their forums, so how a bout instead picking up a copy of "Outrageous Japanese: Slang, Curses & Epithets"
According to my knowledge, there are offensive words in the language that are at least close to the f-word, but if there isn't any word that can be considered a direct translation then I apologize for my misphrasing, whatever.

I hope Viz realizes that this isn't Naruto or Bleach; this is a much smarter and darker adult anime. I can't say I care about any edits Death Note will suffer if it were broadcast on TV, but those DVD's better be unedited top to bottom.
