Confused Hi my name is Raven and the reason why I registered on this site is because I wanna ask everybody if is there any chance for me to be an animator and the problem is I dont really have like a good financial support and as a guy with dreams I'm, workin this out of my own...
Me like all of you loves manga but aside from that I also draw alot of characters that I imagine of and i also have a story in mind but I haven't wrote it yet. I have five main characters in it and some extra characters it also tells about the dimention that I had ever think of...well every bodys sayin if I believe I can do it...
But I think if I'd be given the chance to be educated more about animation, I'm fully confident that I'll be at my fullest level, and I can even finaly bring my characters to life and show every body about my story.
If every body out there might have something to say about this post...pls send it to this Email [email protected]
Thanks for reading this message... Laughing

You could probably ask Answerman how you could get into animating, but instead of having your question go possibly unanswered, you should browse older Answerman columns, because they have the exact same type of questions that you might have about getting into animation.

Best way to get into animation is to major in animation in college, basically. But don't expect that this will get you a free ticket to being a high-profile director for Toei or KyoAni, though, as it's infinitely difficult for a foreign individual to even get full Japanese citizenship, much less a job any higher than minimum wage slave labor. If you work at it, and your ideas are good, you might be able to succeed in the local animation market, but trying to break your way into the Japanese arena is honestly more trouble than it's worth.

Alternatively, if you're dead set on doing manga, you could always try to get into Tokyopop's or Seven Seas' "manga" thing of having foreign artists produce manga-inspired comics.

Really? Maybe its because I am from Southern California and there was a era where everyone was wearing Chuck Taylor.

Basically, yeah, follow Nagi's advice. I majored in animation in college and, in addition, completed a short independent film as my thesis, which performed reasonably well in last year's festival circuit. You basically have two outlets open to you, once you complete your BFA (well, three, really). The first is to join the industry the traditional way, by joining an animation studio. Another path is independent animation; you can apply for artist grants and make your own animated films while building up your reputation at film festivals. Either way, you'll want to complete as much freelance work as you can while you're in school and build up a decent resume so you'll be able to support yourself after graduation. I've had a taste of both options, since I have an animated film in circulation a la festivals (and another independent project in the works) but I'm also working full-time as an animation supervisor at a studio here in Los Angeles (our funding, incidentally, comes from Japan and China and the director, Kayoko Tsuchiya is Japanese, which means I get to draw and animate anime-style characters all day). I'm pretty happy where I am now, considering that--just like you--I took an interest in studying animation through anime.

Also, you might want to consider a graduate degree (I'm not getting one, but my fiance, also an animator, is currently working on his). The schools most celebrated for their animation/film programs are NYU and CalArts--I recommend the latter. I attended MCAD in Minneapolis, which also has a great animation program (but the school itself is more renowned for its graphic design program). If funds are an issue, there's always student loans, grants, and scholarships.

I should mention that my best friend Victor, who graduated a year behind me at MCAD, will have his thesis film distributed in Japan through Studio 4°C. His film will be included on this DVD. So, yeah, it's not an easy task by any means, but it's not totally impossible to achieve your dreams.

Good luck!

Welcome to ANN Nickle4aPickle, Dark_Fairy22, ShiroAkuma, and ruro niko. As new posters let me be the first to welcome you all here. Hopefully you'll continue posting and enjoy yourselves here at ANN. As is customary I must now also give you your free mystery welcome bags. ::hands them all a welcome bag:: Today your bags will contain such wonderful gifts as a handful of unpoped popcorn kernels, a handful of red mulch, 3 eyelashes from a cyclops, and the short hand from a clock. While enjoying these gifts ponder these Words of Wisdom; After twelve years of therapy my psychiatrist said something that brought tears to my eyes. He said, "No hablo ingles."

::hands the welome bag back::

I called the theater and they're a little irked on how slack you've gotten on popping the popcorn.

I got up with Ms. McKinsen and she isn't none too happy about you taking that red mulch she was going to use for her flowers.

I also called the Cyclops. He's pretty pissed you snuck into his home while he was sleeping to yank out his eyelashes. Said something about an eye for an eye, or something along those lines.

I'm keeping the short hand from the clock. It may come in handy.

I called Imigration and they deported your psychiatrist.
