I was looking for a good monthly anime magazine I was thinking about getting newtype but sadly I cant spend 100 dollars for a 1 year subscription and I was just wondering if there any other good magazines out there that were cheaper.

i just got my first subscription to an an anime magazine a couple of days ago to newtype. a year (12 issues) for 80 bucks if u subscribe online but each magazine comes with a dvd with the first episodes to alot of newly licensed titles. im not an expert but my second choice would have been Animerica. i asked a some people i knew and those were the suggestions i got.

No it's bi-monthly right now I believe. The 2 best magazines I think out there are Protoculture Addicts and Anime Insider. PA is bi-monthly and AI is monthly. Ai is a bit of a blend of Newtype and PA. Newtype is more of a introduction type magazine while PA is more review based. AI is pretty much a combo of the two. I like PA myself simply because I prefer something more reviews based. Newtype is fine, and I get it sometimes, but PA is more my cup of tea. A yearly subscription to either PA or AI is also much cheaper. Between 30-40 bucks which is half of Newtype. I'm honestly not impressed with Otaku USA myself but it has only had one issue so far so maybe it'll improve. It's also more expensive then PA and AI, but a bit cheaper then Newtype. You can check out PA simply by looking at the top of the menu as it's affiliated with ANN. See if you like it.

I believe Otaku USA is bi-monthly.

Anime Insider is alright to kill time, but it's easily the weakest of the anime magazines available.

Otaku USA is easily my favorite. I'll likely get a subscription once I cancel Shonen Jump and Shojo Beat...since those are both doing the lovely dropping of series now </3.

There is also Protoculture Addicts.

I used to get Animerica all the time, it was a great anime magazine. I do miss it, I still have some sitting around.

Newtype, I have a hard time justifying the price. I'm sorry a dvd that costs pennies to print, and is a marketing tool to get you to buy anime, isn't something that's going to get me to buy the magazine on that alone.

Newtype USA is about 12 dollars an issue here, if you were in Japan and bought the Japanese version it would cost about $4.50. I know part is the price is that they wouldn't come close to selling as many copies as the Japanese counter-part but it's still bit much for me. I could buy a manga and still have two bucks left.

I know I could probably find out by browsing the wonderfull net but, do any of these magazines get over to the UK (that's me Wink )? I've had a good look around too. Unlike America there's not as much hype for anime in England, and that REALLY sux!!
Any ideas??

I don't know if any of these come out in the UK (you should be able to special order them though a comic shop or maybe a book store). But there is a U.K. anime magazine called Neo Magazine.

Nice! Cheers brand. I'll look into that. Just wish the UK wasn't so closed minded about anime. Rolling Eyes

I believe next year Otaku USA wants to move to a monthly magazine, but we'll see if that happens.

It's not that the U.S. is really more open minded about this stuff, it's just there are a lot more people who live in the U.S. compared to the United Kingdom. So with a larger pool of people it's easier to find other people who enjoy anime.
