Yeah, I've never been a huge fan of Kanye's rapping (I love his producing skills), but the lyrics in this song are just really below par, even for him.
That was Lupe Fiasco. I don't know if that makes Kanye an anime fan on behalf of letting another rapper mention Lupin the 3rd on his record, especially one like britannicamoore said seems to have a lot of anime stuff in his videos, but it might shed a little bit of light. Though it wouldn't surprise me if Kanye were at least be interested in films like Akira or Metropolis. I don't peg him as much of an Azumanga Daioh or Pani Poni Dash! kind of guy, but stuff like Princess Mononoke or Vampire Hunter D seems plausible. |

Somewhat suprised to see that this hasn't been mentioned yet: Kanye West did a track with the Japanese hip-hop outfit Teriyaki Boyz in January (Video). Teriyaki also did tracks for the Tokyo Drift soundtrack (someone on the ANN staff actually has the title track as their cell phone ringtone ) and collaborated with Daft Punk, Pharrell, DJ Shadow and many others on their debut LP.
We don't hate hip hop on ANN, although I will admit I haven't purchased a whole lot of it lately. I can't remember the last time Jurassic 5's Power in Numbers left my CD changer. |

I'm sorry but I think people should discover things for other reasons than an embarrassing music video with an embarrassing song. What you described is a hypocrite. |

The video is okay, I like the Akira references, and its obvious Daft Punk (unfortunately) wanted to be part of it, since they're right in the video with Kanye. Still, his lyrics are simply awful, the same self-congratulatory ego fest that goes on in most, if not all rap songs. I don't see why he has to put himself over so much. If he was any good, you'd think he wouldn't have to. To hear "Harder Better Faster Stronger" used in such an awful song is painful. I'd like to know just what Daft Punk was thinking. I suppose it's all about exposure.

I don't like rap, generally, but that video was awesome.

Oh please, if any of youz get famous, youz do the same thing!
And then, we'll make fun of youz for even incorporating a semblance of anime into your work. |

bluesheep02: Its nice to say people should discover things for other reasons, however for most people out there, these other reasons dont and never will exist. Stuff like this is a great way to get people to give Anime a chance who otherwise wouldnt never do so. Now I do agree that if people are just sorta pretending to be an Anime fan "cause Kanye likes it!" then thats stupid. But if this encourages people to check out Anime and it results in them actuallyrealizing they like it, I dont see how theres anything wrong with that.

I can't stand Kanye's music or any of the modern hip hop that's out there (although I do enjoy some Lil Jon for a good laugh), although I am definitely giving him credit for being a fan of Akira; an 'older' anime, so to speak. Poll some of these anime con attendees and a good chunk will have never even heard of, or seen Akira. So I give credit where credit is due to Mr. West for his inspiration from Akira.
(I do admit the video's a little goofy though...)
Jurassic 5 like a mofo~! Now that's some good hip-hop |

Did I say I didn't like rap? Did I not advocate that a better rapper could do a better job? Just because some of us don't like Kanye doesn't mean we dislike the entire genre, and I don't think there's any room for that sort of logical fallacy on these forums. Please read more carefully in the future. |

Kanye mentioned a year or two ago that he was into anime in an interview with MTV I think it was the winter of 06/fall 05.
I'm never disapointed with any of his songs and I don't usually like rap or hip hop but I love all of his songs. He's a very talented individual in my opinion. |

Well said, I really couldn't have said it better myself. Some of us are too old to remember the first time we got into anime (or into anything in general) was because of another influence or sponsor. The only reason I'm a hardcore KoRn fan was because they were touring with Rob Zombie at the time. The only reason I've been in the anime industry for so long is because my cousin brought over a RAW 5th generation tape of Guyver and told me to watch it because it was cool... Director Little X used Kite as a treatment for No Doubt's "Ex Girlfriend" (Almost page by page) Busta Rhymes and The Wu Tang Clan have pull some notable influences from Martial Art films. Batman Beyond was influenced by Akira, who later would have Static-X do a video for them. 50 cent did a GTA-like video. Micheal Jackson's "Scream" had some anime in the background. And only because of a fateful meeting in Hollywood's Framer's Market/Grove did Linkin Park end up teaming with Gonzo for "Breaking the Habit". The point I'm trying to make is that things like Kanye's video make me super happy to see as like Britannicamoore stated it gets new anime fans that hopefully won't rip off the new stuff online. The Market would destroy itself if every fan was stingy and hoarding as some posters can tend to be. |

Akasan: Just youtubed the No Doubt Video, and it comes off like a PG version of Kite. Anyway, coincidentally, Hype Williams also produced it.

Long time no talk Daniel. Hope all is well for you... Yeah, I did say almost page by page and there was a PG-13 version released. (Ironically, which I prefer.) I was having a chat with director and anime fan Joe D. about it and Little X is Hype Williams protégé. Can't wait too see more! Would love to see a real rock band pick up a Deathnote inspired video. OH! This just came to me. Rob Zombie used scenes from Devilman for his live performances in '99. It was great... |

Akasan: Aw shit, I didn't know you were that Aka-san! I'm cool. I hope things are goin' alright for you, too.
The best we got is this. *sigh* Anyway, I'd like some real anthem music for Eyeshield. I used to tolerate j-pop when it was stuck in the ending credits and didn't ruin my mood while watching the show, but now they'll let any one-hit wonder do the opening vocals. |
