I thought this was a sequel and I thought it had bad animation(from the other cover I saw) but now my fears are gone. I am not excited to be watching this anime

The older designs were better (Arslan was moe in that, here he looks just like Ed Elric)...
But I'm still looking forward to this, and reading the manga. |

This is the adaptation of Hiromu Arakawa's manga. So obviously, they are using the latter's character design. In this case that is the 'original'.

Well, here she is on the cover of the second book (original printing): 
The OVA characters were loosely based off Amano's book covers, though they did elaborate quite a bit. I had just about reconciled myself to the new Arakawa look, and then Falangies shows up dressed like that. This is an embarrassment in a series like this. Oh well, at least we probably won't see her until around ep. 5 or 6... |

I feel like that outfit takes away a good chunk of the significance of Gieve crushing on her. He's a player who ends falling for the chaste, awesome priestess.

The designs look fine to me, but we need some moving animation in the PVs, not just stills of the characters.

I'm more curious to see how many episodes this season will run...but yeah, the design looks kinda odd compared to the original OVAs. Still looking forward to this show though.
