I don't think that's to the surprise of anyone, Theron. For people who like harem shows it's no surprise that they would like a harem show.

For me, as soon as I saw multiple keys in the ending theme to the first episode I never had the desire to see anything more. Shinbo's direction style has gotten boring and stale for me so that wasn't enough of a pull to watch a paint-by-numbers shounen romcom/harem/whatever.

That may be true but some of us do have discerning tastes when it comes to our harems. We don't just simply like every harem that comes out because it's a harem. For example, I liked Shuffle and Sekerei. I did not like He Is My Master.

Both art and sub should be an A. Especially the sub. The voice actors are the definition of excellent in this show.

Is the video on this disc taken from the censored Japanese home video version or the less-censored Japanese broadcast version? (And yes, you read that right. Nisekoi's Japanese BR release was diabolical (link NSFW))

Here's the conundrum: you can have either more steam and corrected animations and some redesigned backgrounds of the BDs, or you can have less steam, original backgrounds, however with a lot of off-model character animation of the broadcast version, but not both.

So I totally get someone really liking Nisekoi if they've never seen one of these before, but for everyone else, it's very much "meh".

Please speak for yourself on that, as I'm very sure that I have seen many of these kind of series before and still found this one funny.
I second this.

Interesting review. I had a friend that was really into the show but said that the manga apparently isn't quite on the up-and-up, so I'm not quite sure what to expect. It seems like something that I may watch on Netflix but don't expect a ton from. I like Akiyuki Shinbo's work as much as the next pokemonogatari fan, but I can only take so much of "herpaderp-kun, choose me over other the other girls because I'm kawaii desu," which this seems to fall into the category of. Also I'm glad you at least touched on the price/value; it's an elephant in the room many reviewers just ignore. Having not seen the series though, I wonder if what you mentioned about the title being "fake love" really is what was intended. I know absolutely nothing about the plot, but I wonder if it's a play on how kids think they've found true love when they're too young to actually know the difference (not exactly uncommon in a high school), hence it being fake love. Could be the usual "b-b-b-baka I don't actually like you or anything, at least until episode 3.14 when I tell you I actually do just in time for the last episode," but who knows.

Nisekoi was far from great but entertaining enough. I think I might just be a bit jaded to the harem genre as I couldn't help but roll my eyes whenever a new girl popped up. And the whole 'I can't remember things from my childhood' shtick did drive me up the wall a fair amount.

Actually after thinking about it for a second the only reason I probably continued watching it is for Onodera. Can't get me enough of some Kana Hanazawa. Razz

I don't think this site has an E-grade, as it uses the American grading system of A-B-C-D-F.

Mmm, Aniplex or no, I'm definitely going to buy this one. Nisekoi was on my favorites of 2014.

THAT'S for sure. There are some harem shows I really like..........and then there are ones where it's like "...........I will never get those hours of my life back." D:

Very true.

Example of an awful (relatively) recent harem: OniAi.
Example of an excellent recent harem: When Supernatural Battles Become Commonplace.

Oh, it's even worse than you probably think it is. The female lead goes around wearing T-shirts which proudly advertise that she's a "brocon" and insists to the other girls that her blood relation to the male lead should give her the edge in getting to bone the male lead first.

And all of that actually has little to do with why I call the series awful.

At least the show does us a favor and at literally the last minute spoiler[tells us that they aren't actually brother and sister so that INSTANTLY justifies them possibly being in a relationship right?...........................right? Confused (mmmmm that kissxsis logic).]

I agree with the music part.

Now, if only they handled the animation better.. At least to be on par with the ***monogatari series. Kinda unfair since they had the same director to get those weird (in a positive way) visuals.
