After abot a 1 year absence from the forums I have returned! This time with a topic that has plagued my mind probly since my 1st time watching a subed verson of an anime.
Sub VS Dub (English), is there that much of a difference? Is one Better then the other? In my opinion I'd have to say yes, there is a big difference. I belive that subtitled shows are better then English dubed ones for a few reasons. One of my reasons would be it is like reading a picture book. Where the viewer can read and put emphsis onto what he|she whats to. They can also interpit what the charector(s) or show is saying in their own way, alot easier then you ca do with a dubed version. Another theory of mine is that the English voice actors don't realy put much emoion into their words. Most of the time I feel like I'm listening to a robot read the script. Not to mention that sometimes they completly mess up the transation or naming of ceritan things as they did in the dubed Bleach that shows on CTN's Adult Swim, but that is a completly different issue so I'll leave it alone and get bck on topic. When I watch a sutitled version of a show(s) and it has the orignal Japanese dialog i feel as tho there is more emotion put into the reading of the script, prehaps it is because i can't undersatand 90% of what is being said, or that I would just like to belive it to be true. Never the less that is how I feel. Feel free to dispute my ideas at will. I look forward to hearing varrying view points on this topic, so please don't let me down! -2Real |

why? Because it is more authentic and dubbing something really makes it loose it's charm for me |

You're opening a huge can of worms here, as these threads always go nowhere and accomplish nothing. Let me tell you how this is going to go: *Some people will more or less reiterate what you said in the quoted comment, i.e. that dub performances lack emotion, are wooden, are pronounced badly, etc. *Others (like me) will then point out that people who think that about all dubs probably haven't seen many dubs *Others will say that they prefer subs because anime was originally made for the Japanese language and viewing audience so that's the correct and natural way to view it. *Others will say that they prefer dubs because they don't like being distracted by the subtitles or like to have anime on as "background" or just prefer watching rather than reading their anime. *Someone will flat-out say that all subs suck. (Usually a very ignorant person who never watches dubs.) *Someone will claim that people who say the former are living in the early '90s, and that the average quality of dubs has vastly improved over the past few years. *Someone will point out the (well anecdotally documented) phenomenon that which language you view an anime in first often determines your preference for whether you prefer the subbed or dubbed version, and that's why sub fans seem to be in the majority in online forums. (Because people who post in online forums are much more likely to watch shows fansubbed first.) Have I missed any major arguments here? As to the quoted post above, I heartily disagree with you, as I have seen plenty of highly emotional dubs, including some that outstrip the original. The average dub these days is on par with the original Japanese performances, with maybe about a quarter of them (in my judgment anyway) being clearly worse. |

You are correct in saying that haven't seen many dubed shows. But the ones i have seen, which numbers around 20-30, were all about the same as far as the voice acting goes. Prehaps it has alot to do with the stuido that is preforming the dubing, because out of of those ones i have seen only FLCL and Beserk realy stick out in my mind as actuly being good even in dub. Others like Inuyasha, Bleach, E's Otherwise, and Ninja Scroll (the TV show, movie want that bad) all realy had some bad voice acting in it in my opinion.

I think you missed the "Japanese acting is not as good as non-Japanese speaking fans think" and "acting is universal" arguments. Other than that I can't think of any.
I think you meant to say dubs here. |

Wasn't there a thread like this before? Or did that one end with a huge, pointless debate that led to its demise?
Anyway, Key pretty much gave out the possible opinions of the people who are gonna post in this thread. |

It's not a strange request at all. Sorry 
I prefer subs, mostly because I get to appreciate the original dub of the anime and learn Japanese at the same time. It's not because almost all the English dubbed anime I've watched had sucky dubs. Plus if I watch anime with English dub, it gets too easy for me to watch. I don't have to keep my eyes on the screen the whole time since I can just listen. The subs keep me concentrated and I'm able to take in all the details. |

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion on subs vs. dubs. I prefer subs usually because I think, as one of Key's sub-favored arguements, I find a lot of dubbing to be...in poorer quality. I never used to watch subbed though, because of most of the dubbed arguements Key proposed
 , but one day I bought Miyuki-chan in Wonderland, a show that's only been subbed, and over time I began to watch nothing but subbed and I just grew a habit of watching it.
I don't think all dubs are poor, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Vandread, and many other shows from the earlier 00' and 90's had decent dubbing, in fact I prefer those over newer voice actors because the newer voice actors try too hard to make it sound like the original, they put too MUCH emotion into their characters. I can't tell you how many times I turn off the Adult Swim at 12:30 when Orihime on Bleach comes on, I think her actress is terrible. I'm going to issue one warning here, and one only.
It's general policy on ANN not to allow people to revive the "sub vs. dub" debate because that horse is not only dead, it has been flogged so often after its demise that it is a tattered rag of former horseflesh. Still, it has been a while since we had one of these threads... so I'll allow it temporarily, on condition of responsible behaviour by all. I'm not sure that's true. Most of us grew up with dubbed anime, with no option to see subtitled anime until much later in our lives. But as soon as I could watch anime subtitled, it pretty much blew all dubbing away. Now even today's 'well-dubbed' shows--which are all over the TV dial--seem kinda laughable in English. Subtitles are just less of a compromise over all. And they can make it really difficult to 'go back' to watching dubs. |

That sums it up very nicely. I haven't been on ANN for any of these..."discussions"...but I have certainly been through them on other forums and in real life. The only thing I might add is this: in the anime club I sponsor at school there's a student who sometimes attends that is sight-impaired. Therefore his preference is most certainly dubs. Likewise, a hearing-impaired person would then prefer subs as well. Anyway, we end up watching both sub and dub stuff at club meetings, and most people are happy most of the time, which I guess is the best that we can do. The bigger issue for me is balancing shounen versus shoujo for the guys and the girls ^_- I thought this was a much bigger issue when we still had VHS and two different releases for each show for sub and dub. But it never seems to die, as previously stated. |
