Ya know, as much as I would like to support the anime industry, region blocking on DVDs and BD's makes it cumbersome or impossible and it's at a point where torrents are the only options we've got.

Have you not heard of these wonderful things called Hulu, Netflix, and Crunchyroll? Plus there's ANN and Funi who both have streaming. I could go on and list more but I think it's safe to say there are other options. Torrents are the only way to download entire series to keep for free is what you meant to say I'm sure.

It all depends on where you live and what you want to watch. I think anime is pretty well served here. I'm not fond of geoblocking and region coded discs, but I have VPNs and an Oppo BD player to sort out most of those issues (putting aside Aniplex's absurd restrictions in shipping discs from the US and other anti-exporting/importing blockages they attempt to impose on consumers).
As for other TV shows on cable, we have the monopoly of Foxtel to deal with. It's understandable why people torrent their shows, and why Foxtel find the opening of Netflix into Australia next year such a threat. |

If you live in New York City or the California area, you can buy cheap Japanese region DVDs at BookOff. http://www.bookoffusa.com/?cmd=store You can also buy Japanese PlayStation 2 consoles & DVD players so that you can watch them. Here's a little hint on another way how to watch Japanese DVDs. You can switch your region settings on your PC or laptop & you can play your imported DVDs from Japan. The only problem is that you can only switch your region settings around 4 times. You can also easily solve this by resetting your hard drive back to factory setting. |

I obviously live in a country that does NOT have Hulu, Netflix, or Crunchyroll services and ANN and FUNi do not cater to where I am. Where I am, we have absolutely ZERO anime distribution. And I'm the only person I know here who has a shelf full of original anime DVDs and Blu-rays which I'm lucky correspond to my region settings. [EDIT: Took out the condescension and rudeness. -TK] |

And a few of my favorite series aren't available to me or in Japanese in America, even among online stream services. It's rare, but it's a thing I still dealt with whenever I wanted to watch Pokemon in Japanese or try and watch Dennou Coil. Now, I actually have legal access to Japanese television that I catch every Thursday morning at 5am EST for Pokemon and I was given a few Japanese DVDs for Dennou Coil as a birthday present (not all of them yet, but enough to satisfy me with my favorite episodes for a bit). But back when I wanted to watch either of them regularly and didn't have access to either of these options...
I mean, I'm extremely supportive of the range of access to anime we've gotten now, and I've switched my outlet (when Crunchyroll isn't skipping on me, even with a subscription), but I'm also glad torrents exist for when I need something that cannot immediately stream or easily be found for purchase online. And soon, I will not have a stable income to be able to keep my subscription, let alone buy anything I want to watch physically... but at least I'm accepting that this is my problem--not the industry's. Still, I'm not exactly willing to give up what I love and there are several free options, but not for the stuff I really like to follow... |

I've always wondered – do most Americans actually even know that you can't use Hulu, Funimation and so on if you don't live in North America? Or don't they just care?
For the record, Netflix works in quite a few countries these days. But at least in my region the only anime there are Wolverine and Iron Man, dubbed in English. |

Well, it does say USA and Canada at the top of the page right beside the logo. Yes, we are aware that because of the nature of the internet that anyone who can read and write English can post here. However, the majority that do post here are from North America and none of us is psychic. You are nice enough to give us a location so we don't mistake where you are from. I realize that for some giving a specific location or even country may be problematical. However, a location as non specific as "Asia" or "South America" would be helpful in preventing such mistakes. Even listing a location of "not North America" would be better than nothing if it bothers a person to be taken for a north American. |

While I understand where you're coming from, I would say that if a comment someone wants to make depends on understanding that you do/don't live in a particular area, it is worth mentioning that fact. Assumptions can be easily dispelled by offering a bit of fundamental information. For example, saying, "I don't live in North America, so I can't watch Hulu," would go a long way toward correcting such assumptions. |

Wouldn't it be easier to just not assume that your fellow posters are idiots, and that if they express that they have a problem, then maybe they actually do have that problem?

It is probably reasonable to assume that the person has a problem, but it is not safe to assume what the problem is. It is impossible to distinguish the people who cannot get any legitimate anime from the people who just cannot get any free anime, and there are some of those, unless the person provides some information. Is there really a good reason for not giving your location? |

I'm pretty sure that the-antihero was thinking that it'd be obvious from the previous comment they made on how region locking is a big hassle for them. |
