Cheap? Imports? Uhh... those are probably illegal bootlegs. Japanese imports are very expensive. 99% of the region 0 (all region, region free, R0, whatever) DVDs that have bad english subtitles are illegal bootlegs. As long as you know what you're buying |

I buy R1 dvds and manga, download fansubs/scanlations, and buy HK dvds, download RAW anime (only way to get the newest eps of One Piece )
I don't buy or download liscensed anime unless I started getting the series before the liscense was announced. If I can get the series at the local store, I would prefer to get it that way. I view fansubs/scanlations/HK dvds as a means to get anime/manga that I am unable to get any other way. I will admit that I have broken this rule with a few series. I have bought a few series on HK dvd that were liscensed and completed allready by an American company. In these cases, they were only series that I would not have bought the R1 dvds anyway. |

I don't buy licensed anime unless I really like it, because it is so expensive. The same is true for U.S. TV shows and movies (which I basically get to watch for free on television first to see if I like them enough to buy). If every anime were on television in the U.S. like it is in Japan, I would never bother to download fansubs. But since, unlike American TV shows, typically the only way to watch most anime is to buy it or download it, I make the logical choice. I also have a preference for subtitles which typically cannot be satiated on American television, which almost always shows the dubs.
But I do rent anime from netflix and local video stores. This may not support the industry as much as buying the DVDs but at least it is a good compromise between fansubs and purchasing. And since I usually throw the fansubs I download away right after I watch them anyway, I really only want to watch most shows once. |

I just wanted to point out something about this particular line. Not EVERY anime is on Japanese TV. OAVs are direct to video. So the only way the Japanese get to see it is if they go out and buy it (or rent it or borrow from friends, etc). It's only the TV series that are on TV. |

Those are two different questions. They should be separated in to two different polls.

Additionally, a fair amount of the anime on Japanese TV is on Pay TV or Pay Per View. -t |

I do download fansubs, but I think that official DVD releases are worth the money that I pay for them. I like the fact that you can go to a local anime convention and meet the people from ADV and similar companies. They seem like nice people who know what fans want, more or less. I really don't get the same feeling from fan subbers.

I buy all my anime and manga. I only download titles that have not yet been picked up here. Besides, I'm on 56k, I'm not gonna waste my time downloading anime, and I only bother downloading the manga I really wanna read.
But at my current standing point, I just buy buy buy |

I've only recently begun to download fansubs, but the ones I have I've already realized I like enough to get the dvds once they are licenced and released.

I don't download fan subs as much anymore. But when I did do it alot I would generally go pick up the R1 dvd's because they picture is so much better than on my computer. I also can sometimes not find all the episodes for a show that I like, so I go pick up the R1's, but I'm glad the japanese are starting to crack down on fansubbing, because I think it's getting to the point that it might start hurting the industry.
