Since this came up on another board, I thought I'd see what the responses were on here.....

How do you pronounce Di Gi Charat?

Personally, I say Deh Gee Sha-raht

Edit: I shall note that I suck at pronunciations, so feel free to poke fun at stuff Very Happy

Sounds good to me; that's what I've always said, at least.

Now here's something I want to know: how do you pronounce RahXephon? Just like it looks?

The first time I remember really figuring out how to say Evangelion was from listening to one of the CDs in the S2 collection. There were like, 20+ tracks devoted to one guy saying over and over, "Ay-VON---gay-lee-on" in a really cheesy voice. Geez, and I thought it was useless to have 20 different versions of Fly Me To the Moon on my Eva CDs...

Hmm...
That IS a tricky question... If we consider English pronunciation (eg my sweet ol' Gimson's Pronunciation, oh how I love my studies - English Philology...)

Well I've always pronunced Di GI charat as Dee Gee Sharaht sometime Di Gi with J as in "digi-tal' (my tip, that it comes from digital, but anyway...I'm not an expert...)

RahXephon - well as English pronunciation says that X should be pronunced as 'Z' (eg. Xena, Xerox etc.) I would say Rah-Zee-von... (again. I'm not an expert on English pronunciation... had it only for a year, and in RP British English version, but I think the rules stay the same...)

And as for Evangelion... ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION SUCKS!
I think that according to pronunciation, both versions should be correct, but it is always better to follow the makers of the series... sigh... (sometimes I think learning Latin would be better (tried it for a year in high school, though... (no comments))

BTW do you know how my nick should be pronunced?
(a tip here: it is an example for ridiculousnes of English pronunciation, heh ^_^)

Di Gi Charat is pronounced a bit differently than how it's spelled.

It looks like Digi (like Digimon or digital) but I often hear people say it "deegee" with long e's. The Charat is a kinda odd, you say it like you would Carrot but stress the "a" like Ka-rot. I've heard quite a few people say it taht way, especially at Otakon.

RahXephon I've been hearing as Rack-se-fon if that makes sence. You have to say it all as one word. The hx makes like a ck and the xe makes a se sound, not an xe sound like you'd think. Phon would be like a fon sound. Again, this is how I was hearing it at Otakon.

As for Evangelion, I still pronounce it Ev-an-gel-ee-on because I can't help but think the japanese derived it from the word evangelist, even though I know I'm saying it wrong. The way I see it is japanese people saying an english routed word wrong doesn't make that the right way to say it.

Emerje, you are right.

In the episode where Dejiko arrives in Akihabara, she says that her full name is Di Gi Charat (and here she pronunces it like Dee-Je(like in 'jabot')-Ka-ra-to, or something similar)

I've never seen DiGi Charat, but I always pronounced it DiGi (like in digital) and Charat (with 'ch' like in 'charlie') without knowing any better.

With RahXephon, I agree with Emerje. I say Rak-se-fon. I have no idea if thats right.

I say Evangelion with a hard 'G' like in 'good' ala the original Japanese.

One that I think is an interesting pronounciation is 'Armitage' How do you think this should be pronounced?

ghoti, do you pronounce you name 'fish' Smile

And here's the today's winner!

Ramen gets the top prize!

You're right!

^_^

It should be pronunced FISH, but I don't mind people pronouncing it as it suits them... I usually pronounce it as it goes,so...

Bravo, Ramen!

BTW Did you also read the statement by (I think it was) G.B. Shaw where he proves English to be absurd?

my pronunciations:
digicharat - deh ('deh' as in 'debby') gee (as in the letter 'g') karat (as in 24 karat gold)
rahxephon - rah (_ra_bbit) zeh (_ze_n) fawn
evangelion - evan (Evan, as in the name) gel (as in '_g_oo' and 'w_ell_') e (as in the letter 'e') on

it should be noted that the pronunciation of digicharat comes from the its katakana subtitle:
"de ji kyaratto"

Was that the dealy where he said that your name, ghoti, would work out to sound like fish because:

the "gh" like in the word enouGH sound like an "F"

and then the "o" found in a word such as wOmen makes an "I" sound

and the "ti" as in emoTIon are pronounced as "SH"

so ghoti=GH+O+TI = F+I+SH=fish

I knew that being an English major would come in handy one of these days. ^_^

I've never heard the original Japanese version, but in the English dub (adaptation?) of Poly-Matrix it's pronounced just like it looks.

Ar-mih-tidge

Heh heh... I didn't learn that one until last spring. And oddly enough, I learned it from a self-professed non-fan.

Not that it surprises me, considering my utter lack of interest in the series since I saw Pen-Pen's introductory episode way back when...
Rolling Eyes

Here's another hard one I just learned a few days ago: El Hazard.

El ha-ZARD

They never make anything easy anymore, do they. Confused
