It is not unexpected these days to see anime pop up in unexpected places anymore. As anime and manga fans get older and obtain positions of influence it is not surprising they may interject their love of anime and manga in what they do. I expect to see more references to both continue to pop up.

It's weird, I never ran into issues with anime/manga ratings until I was an adult and it shouldn't matter anymore. I got carded for buying Hetalia at Best Buy and felt quite awkward, like they thought I was buying porn or something...

Hetalia has swearing, so innocent ears must be protected of course. But the reason why you're carded in mainstream stores and the same reason why game retailers also card everyone, and the ridiculous NANA label, is related to the history Polycell mentioned above, and they're implicitly coerced by the government:

Though I'm glad to wait if it means they'll include the picture dramas and audio dramas in their set, because the story really isn't complete without them. Maybe even the season 2 ones that Bandai never released. One can only hope...

Those are at least on the way from what I've heard. I think they said something about it in their last ANN podcast. Something about trying to acquire various extras and stuff. I doubt they will try for the audio dramas, but other stuff I'm sure is in the works. As long as they get it out to us eventually I'll be fine.

On the other hand, Tatami Galaxy is what I'm really curious about. I guess they answered that question some time ago, but I haven't been able to find anything on it. Considering that Siren Visual has put it out on DVD in Australia it just seems strange for there to be contract issues in NA, but not out there. The only thing I can think of is if there is still a hold on the Blu-ray rights from that whole reverse importation scare back in its earlier days. Which is fine, as long as they can put out a Blu-ray eventually. I probably wouldn't buy it on DVD anyway since one of its biggest draws is the awesome art.

Just for the record, both Seasons of Strike Witches got an MA15+ rating here in Australia. Although I assume the movie will probably get an M rating since I don't recall any bath scenes.

Actually, even though I generally absolutely despise our classification system, I think MA15+ is an appropriate rating.

I never read manga in public because you never know when you're going to turn a page and find an NSFW image, and most of the time the ratings don't tell you anything. You can be flipping through a perfectly innocent shonen title when -- BAM -- scantily clad girl in a suggestive pose. Or you'll be in the middle of a shoujo title and you suddenly come across a scene with a girl changing clothes.

You need to watch that 30 Rock episode (or again if you have).

James Franco wasn't carrying around a Japanese body pillow with his Waifu on it... the pillow was his waifu. It led to many great lines like "Objects are made by men, and used for a variety of tasks, but we do not love them" and "I'm the actor James Franco, damn it, and I'm in love with, and common-law married to, a Japanese body pillow!"

It might be making fun of "guy dates inanimate object" story of Japan... but it's still really funny...

I always feel like America is a little heavy handed with ratings and censoring. And then I remember that in the UK TMNT was called Hero Turtles and Michelangelo's nunchucks were censored.

Anime in not so strange places- this past season of Legend of Korra (book 3) had a character named "Otaku", which made me giggle.

I've been hearing that an upcoming episode of Gravity Falls will feature the character Soos playing a dating sim. I'm a bit apprehensive about how they'll handle dating sims on a kids' show. Archer did a hilarious job with Krieger's anime waifu, but that show is definitely not for children.

The latest season of Nickelodeon's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has the turtles watching a hilarious Voltron/Mecha parody (last season they watched an even funnier Star Trek' The Animated Series parody).

Tatami Galaxy is licensed for streaming by Funimation, but not home video release. Funi reps have implied that series without good streaming numbers won't get released by them.

Libraries are pretty good at sorting kids/teens/adults anime and manga, but every once in a while I see a shelving decision that makes me want to reshelve things a bit. Like Black Jack is usually in the adults section even though it seems suitable for teens (surgical realism?). Fumi Yoshinaga's All My Darling Daughters in the adult section makes sense, unless you've just noticed her more innuendo filled Antique Bakery in the Teens room...just strange

The ratings discrepancies are something's that I'm always interested in. Sentai always fascinates me, giving To Love Ru and Another TV14 ratings, the same as K-On!, Allison and Lillia, and Place to Place. Funimation too: Aquarion gets a TVMA while Evol gets TV14, despite having almost the same content in terms of violence and (nipple free) nudity. I usually use the ratings to determine if something is NSFW or not, (PG /13= SFW, MA/17=NSFW, 14=can be either) but they can be unreliable.

As a note the guy who created Hook Ups skateboards, Jeremy Klein, is a fan of anime and Japan (some of his older skateboards had images from Mario Bros) . The skate video Asian Goddess even has anime clips in it. I like Hook Ups. I saw the Iria one a couple years ago, and I have a tech deck based I think on a character from X or Rayearth, I'm not sure. Most of the designs look like 90's/early 2000's character designs.

Weird anime popup? In the first episode of American Horror Story the girl was reading theNana manga. Then there was that recent Apple commercial where a picture of Chi's Sweet Home came out.

So I'll turn this one over to the forums... Guys, where are some completely unexpected places you've seen anime pop up over the years?

I'll happily admit to being part of the problem. I'm co-authoring a book on iOS 8 development for digital release next week (when iOS 8 comes out), and I just added a screenshot where we use the the pinch-zoom sample project to pick out two Evangelion cosplayers in the background of my co-author's Twitter avatar. I tweeted a preview screenshot.

Unexpected anime:

Space Quest I VGA (1991)
One of the droids you can purchase (and subsequently die to) is the HA-Y-AO. It looks like the Robot from Laputa and it's obviously named after Hayao Miyazaki. It's interesting that it's in a game of this era considering they would have had to be part of a VHS trade group to watch it (or something).

In game description:
These are really some of the most useful all-purpose robots around, and extremely good with children. Of course, they're all in hibernation this time of the century. I could let you have him for just 875 buckazoids.

Screenshot:

The game's droids also reference Five Star Stories Mirage Knights as "Murage":

Ah, yes, a truly beautiful piece of machinery. This design rates five stars. Although a handsome machine, this robot has a habit of killing people without any real reason. I'd love to sell you one, but every last one I had was snapped up by a movie director from New Japan IV - sorry.

And in the map creation section the hero goliath unit is called Allen Schezar. (And the firebat is Guy Montag, but that's not anime related. Smile )

The MPAA, which is the independent body that determines movie ratings in America...

I believe it is owned by the major studios and is in no way independent. Blockbuster films get artificially lower movie ratings so as to bring in a wider audience while films from independent or smaller studios have the opposite problem; their films get artificially higher ratings so as to hobble their popularity.

Well the strangest place I've had an "anime encounter" was hearing music from Rurouni Kenshin in the film Lolita. Seriously, I even had to check. They're not on the OST though, but check the movie, I swear, there's even a review on Amazon about it, so I know I didn't imagine it. It's not even faint background music, I distinctly remember the music at full volume in one scene.

The less strange instance was on Atari Teenage Riot's record Delete Yourself. It has several samples of anime dubs, mainly 3x3 Eyes on at least 2 songs (Start the Riot and Raverbashing), Legend of the Overfiend, Akira. Also the line "Kamui's weapon x aligned with the god text" in the song Anarchy 999.

Isn't that just plain funny? It's fine to show people bleeding nearly to death, it's fine to show battalions of soldiers getting blown up, it's fine to show psychological situations where someone is thrust into a situation where people are dying and it is your job and responsibility to protect them and if you screw up then it is their blood on your hands and did I mention you have no friggin' clue what you are doing except what some people told you might work?

That's perfectly fine.

I am not saying that I entirely disagree, I just find it funny what people find to be disturbing. As someone above pointed out, X anime has a swear in it so it has to be restricted. OMG words! Words that anybody who was ever a kid knows that kids will use more than an angry sailor, [b]because[b] they are restricted...
