Umm, this is my first topic here, so please be kind guys & gals. Anime catgrin + sweatdrop

I have been an anime fan for a very long time. I watch all manner of genres, from mecha to shoujo, & I'll quite happily watch series raw, fansubbed (& the occasional fandub too), as well as legit dubs & subs. I can't say that I have a favourite genre as I'll watch any anime given half the chance, & the majority of the time, anime is just another visual medium for me. But there have been occasions where I just get completely engrossed by a particular title.

Over the past 25 years I have been watching anime this 'obsession' has occurred precisely four times. The first was Hirano's Fight! Iczer-1 back in the late 80's. I saw an extremely ropey raw on VHS tape, but somethng about the series just clicked with my subconcious & would not let go. I ended up trying to find out as much information about the series as was humanely possible. I bought artbooks, untranslated manga from Japan, the OST's, & when I found out that the series was being released by US Renditions, I spent a small fortune buying a NTSC compatible VHS player, solely so I could have a pristine copy of the series. I even went as far as to get an article published in a (now defunct) UK anime magazine. Anime catgrin + sweatdrop

The next series to get this fanatical treatment was Evangelion back in 1996 (the volume of merchandising I have for this series is staggering). Evangelion is special to me in that it re-kindled my interest in anime when it was at a very low ebb (nearly jacked in my fandom altogether). This was quickly followed by Shoujo Kakumei Utena in 1998, a series that I bought by accident thinking it was another title. It was also the series that made me realise that I shouldn't judge an anime by it's genre alone as I wasn't a fan of shoujo till I saw this show.

My current fangirl obsession is Mai-HiME (the OST is playing in the background at this moment). I spend an inordinate amount of time online trawling for fan art, reading fan fiction (I'm helping a couple of writers by proof reading chapters before they are posted up on various fan fiction sites), & translated Japanese doujins too. If I had any kind of real computer skills, I'd have a shrine dedicated to ShizNat. Anime catgrin

My long suffering hubby just pats me on the head, & says 'it will pass', & undoubtedly with time my latest love will burn down to a point where it's not taking up so much of my time. But I do find it kind of scary & wierd that particular series will grab my attention so forcefully (& so randomly too).

Does this happen to anyone else? Does anyone here get that fanatical about a particular show? If so, what do you do? Do you write fan fiction or draw fan art? Go on forums to discuss & analyze the show to death with other fans? Buy all the related merchandising till it's coming out of your ears?

Or am I just a weirdo who is displaying subtle signs of OCD? Anime hyper It would be nice to know that I'm not alone. Anime catgrin

Well I suppose I'll concede to enormous obsession over Dragonball. I've been fan since of it since 1994. I've seen plenty anime, and nothing's ever impacted me the same way. Am I supposed to feel stupid? I certainly hope not. Many people say Dragonball is overrated, yet popular says more than just "Look at me, I'm overrated." There's usually a reason why things get so popular. Anyhow, I animate - well, learning to animate. I draw, write & do video work. Usually all in some way related to Dragonball. I would've thought I'd give up by now, but the interest's not going anywhere.

I respect your obsession with anime.

Haha, no, you're not alone. I'm pretty well known as being a Princess Tutu fangirl here on the forums, and not without reason--any chance I get I'm trying to get people to watch the show or I'm blabbering about how much I love it. It's also been the first series where I've really done any serious amounts of fanfiction for, as well...and I'm also roleplaying several characters from the series on LJ roleplays...and I MIGHT even be dragged into cosplay or AMVs for the series, something I never really had the courage to do before. It's gotten to the point where it's sort of weirded out my brother a bit.

I'm sure there will be a point where I won't be AS crazy about the series as I am now, but I absolutely love the show, so it'll probably always have a special place in my heart. Oh, and for the record, I'm friends with several other fangirls of the show that are the same way, so...no, you're definantely not alone.

I really don't have any one series that I fangirl over like a maniac, but I have quite a few that I fangirl over pretty badly. My current obsessions are Kyo Kara Maoh, Host Club, and Fate/Stay Night.

Well I've been into anime for going on 12 years now. I usually don't get "obsessed" or "fanatical" but I do at times get very involved and overly enjoy a particular movie or series (examples being Gunslinger Girl, Oh My Goddess, or "X" tv). For those gems I hold as my favorites I try and post on them, get fan drawings, wallpapers, art prints at cons, and buy other merchandise. There are 2 exceptions though, I am a Resident Evil and Lady Death fanatic. I have actually written a few of my won short stories on both. Embarassed

Trust me your not alone!
I have loved Cowboy Bebop since I first saw it on Adult Swim. I have bought Art books, OST's, The dubbed and Raw DVD's, Raw manga, Subbed manga, action figures(lol), and posters. I dont realy like being a big fanboy about anime's, but I just couldn't help it with this one, especially since the first time I saw it, was when I was 13.

I've gone through that "obsessive" phase a few times in my early days of watching anime. When I first got into anime I was a BIG Cardcaptor Sakura fan and bought any merchandise I could find for it. I was also a big Pokemon fan, and used to wake up very early in the morning so I could record episodes of the show. I didn't have that much merchandise of it, though.

I'm not really as obsessive as I used to be back then, however. (Though there are rare occasions where I can get obsessed with something.)

I watch a lot of stuff as well, and yeah there's defintely been series I've been way more interested in than others. A few examples include Monster, Planetes, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Noir, Black Lagoon, Haibane Renmei, Elfen Lied, Ergo Proxy, When They Cry and recently Rumbling Hearts. I suppose you could call them obsessions. I could name about 20 more but I'll stop there as those comprise my all time favorites as well. Usually the series I tend to like the best are either science fiction, are philosophically or psychologically complex, otherwise possess an incredible storyline, or are dark and offen disturbing in nature which is quite contrary to my personality actually. Razz

Now if you want obsession, you should see what happens whenever I sit down to play Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.....

There's simply nothing wrong with being a "hardcore" fan of a show(s). I'm sure it happens to a lot of other fans as well! Smile

This is like the 5th time I've said it here, but I'm COMPLETELY obsessed with all of Kazuya Minekura's works. Saiyuki is my number. I'm a raging, flamboyant, squealing, obsessive, drooling fan girl of Saiyuki.

Ah yes I have had my obsession streaks. My first began with Tenchi Muyo, then it moved to Evangelion, then it moved to Outlaw Star which is still effecting me, and Black Lagoon...I kept replaying that ending theme for the end of the twins arc over and over on my computer.

Yeah, I guess you could say I've had my fair share of obsessions. DBZ was my obsession for a very long time, then it shifted to FMA for a few years, now both Naruto and Bleach are my current ones. Except I'd say I'm still pretty much obsessed with all of those, it's just that I'm more obsessed with one compared to the other. I don't know if you could really call them obsessions though, since I've never really done any fanfics, drawing, or cosplaying, but T-shirts, video games, posters, action figures, and of course DVDs, I did a lot of, so yeah, maybe I was a little. Well, I went through the whole DBZ phase as I am sure that many peope here can relate to Razz . Hell, at school, we had these book-covers that they had us put on the school textbooks they gave us, and I always had mine on the blank side and would draw my own fan-art of the DBZ characters and whatnot. I beleive I still have those drawings somewhere in my room.

After that died down about half-way through highschool, no other anime did that to me until I finally got myself to watch Evangelion a couple years ago. Being a mild 'mech-hater,' I stayed away from it until it showed up on Adult Swim. I was blown away, couldn't stop thinking about it, etc. Heh, after seeing the series (1st series I ever marathoned in 2 days time), I woke up early before classes started and ran to each video store in my town to find the movie ending. Some of my friends actually got sick of me talking about it Embarassed The obsession has since died down, but its still one of my favorites.

The current obsession I have as we speak is with the classic Tenchi Muyo, I just can't get enough of it! Shocked I bought the OAV Ultimate set about a month or two ago and I practically have it memorized. I also bought the Tenchi Universe complete set (eventhough its not scheduled to be out for another 2 weeks but has been on store shelves for almost a month now Confused ) and watched that all the way through in about 4 days. I think its a mixture of the weird, crazy, rather ridiculousness of the universe along with Ayeka and Ryoko's rivalry and of course, little Washu. I'm actually re-watching Ryo-Ohki as I type this. No other girls in the romance-comedy genre can compete those 3 space cats Wink Man, I wish I had my own rabbit/cat thing that can transform into a spaceship, or light-hawk wings, heh heh...

Two words for you: Mind Game. March 28, 2005 (the day I watched the DVD) changed my perception of animation forever. Regulars around here already know I love love love love this movie and never hesitate to name-drop it whenever I can. Ever since I bought it I've watched it whenever I need inspiration. My fiance and I have watched it 100+ times by now and have shown it to dozens of people (including independent animators such as Igor Kovalyov and Tom Schroeder). If I've ever approached the boundaries of obsession, it's been on account of Mind Game. We've definitely been inspired in our work, as well.

My fiance loves it even more than I do, if you can believe it. He's to the point now where he can't enjoy anime anymore because "It's not as good as Mind Game." I had to hear this during TokiKake AND Paprika. I'm not there yet, but I'm on my way. ^^;
