NOOOOOOOOO. NO. THEY RUINED HIM.
Guess this isn't directly related to the original series though. That's a wacky premise. Also no mention of THE girls.
Also, check out that Lum ripoff costume (the legs and bra) on that one girl.

So this is a completely unrelated series or they're doing a time jump for the series.

I dont think this is related to the series they are probably just using some of the character designs and use a few of the hijinx but it is completly unrelated to the main franchise just like pretty sammy

Wow, they actually found/brought back Hiroshi Negishi. I don't remember seeing his name since...Amazing Nurse Nanako? Divergence Eve? At this point I suspect he's honestly the biggest point of continuity between this and other Tenchi series.

Actually, I think tiger-print clothing is traditionally associated with the ogres of Japanese mythology, which I think Lum's design was also originally referencing. This is made more obvious by the spiked club the character is holding. Though, it's possible using those specific garmets in this design could be a nod to Lum.
Anywho, it looks like they're making high school the focus of this series, which is kind of annoying (it's not like we don't already have enough high school life series these days). Sure, Tenchi originally was a high school student, but usually the universe focused on his family life at home.
That said, I do like Suzuhito Yasuda's art style, it's pretty distinct, though the girls designs seem maybe a bit too fan-servicey.

Yeah, I've also liked Suzuhito Yasuda's art style.

So... it's basically not Tenchi Muyo at all. Or anything even approaching it, design or otherwise. I mean, you might as well have "Tenchi Masaki" be a talking kangaroo.
Well, I guess this is more Kajishima's speed nowadays, anyway.

Well, another show featuring animation character designs from an unexpected artist. I don't think you need too much of an excuse to feature Yasuda's designs, but for a Tenchi series? Never liked the franchise all the much, though I remember when it was one of the most popular back in the early 2000s, but this news alone has me wanting to sample its newest iteration. Don't know about the whole teacher/student thing, but it could definitely be hilarious if done right…
(Come to think of it, this feels like a replay of what I thought about Tadashi Hiramatsu and Parasyte…)

They didn't "ruin" him, they just reshuffled the Demon of Rashomon-triangle characters (Tenchi Flash?), and used the "student teacher" gimmick to turn him into Negima.
...Okay, they ruined him.
(So, guess he gave up on the family shrine, then?)

Think they wanted to substitute the old characters and bring in a "replacement Ryoko", so alien shrine-Demon was replaced by unexplained Oni-girl. Hence the "strength like an ogre", in the description.
(And while they're at it, the pink rival student-council president is now a prim and righteous self-appointed authority figure...Hmm.)
Lum never carried the myth-iconic spiked bat...Er, except in one episode.

Eesh, that's rough to look at.
