Quote: | This ignores the fact that such idealized Adonises are usually as much heterosexual male wish-fulfillment as the accompanying sex-object women. |
Let's not forget attractive women are heterosexual female wish-fullment as well No sense in playing favorites when the street goes both ways.

That's an interesting challenge. I'm excited to see what people come up with, I might give it a go for funsies, more than the prize.

King's backstory from AOF/KOF is not about self loathing. She was a Muay Thai Champion that had to disguise herself as a man because women were forbidden in the Muay Thai world back then.
Her secret is exposed, and she ends up having to work for Mr.Big's gang in South Town.
In Art Of Fighting 2, we later find out she did all this for the sake of her younger brother who was very ill.
Also, King was not the only fighter whose top is destroyed in The King Of Fighters 1994 and 1995, it happens to Yuri as well. I don't see the big deal about it, it's just a harmless throw back to the original series and as well as being minor "fanservice", which I don't see why that's a big deal. I thought people liked fanservice? The last place I expected to see complaints about a lil fanservice is an anime site.
I mean it's not like Mortal Kombat where every female character is big breasted, not wearing much (lol @ Flesh Pit Mileena in MK9, horrible), wear high heels, and get their heads lopped off, torsos split in half, and other gorey things.
At least in SNK fighters there's alot of variety of different female character designs that can appeal to just about anyone. You want a bouncy ninja girl not wearing much? There's Mai. You want a classy high kicking woman? King is the King. You want a high pitched psychic school girl/pop idol? Athena is the one for you. And that's barely scratching the surface.[/quote]

I wasn't aware that XSEED Games asked Acquire to do that for the male bosses. Extra content I will happily enjoy. They didn't have to though; Akiba's Trip is perfect as is.
Quote: | Its modern champion is Senran Kagura, an horribly successful series about ninja girls who just can't keep their costumes together. |
If you're very good at the games their costumes stay together. Just thought I'd point that out in case you haven't played any of them. And 'horribly successful', really?

Don't the costumes pop off the enemies you defeat?
If so, his point pretty much stands.
And un-surprisingly in his attempt to discredit the article, losttune misses the whole point.
Yes attractive women would be female wish fulfillment, but I sure doubt the context (ie the damsel in distress, the whore, being played up as the sex object) or lack of actual agency that comes with these wish fulfillment female characters is what female players/readers/whatever want. That's the big part of the problem with these things. Thats what this article is about, they aren't equal all the time. The male character may also be wish fullfillment, but a lot of the time he'll still have some sort of agency.

So, instead of Akiba's Trip getting censored for a NA release, we get bonus scantily clad men? Not really anything I'd get excited for, but I think it's a pretty good alternative to straight-up censorship. Beats out what other companies do by a longshot.
Though TBH I care more about the virtual Akihabira than anything else in the game, as a $40 game is far cheaper than a plane ticket to Japan.

No matter how much columnists will (continue to complain) , these games will continue to be popular, Akiba strip sounds awesome, and senran kagura is absolutely epic. Because you can take of their clothing. I also LOVED the anime, bought it on blu-ray to too support companies continuing to release such anime (I usually don't but them but made an exception lol). I loved all the sexy ninja chickies <3
I wanna play the 3ds game tough, but out of money for now, ironically because I bought a super-ecchi "beach" Senran Kagura wallscroll at the latest anime convention, and a highschool of the dead one So now I can't buy smexy awesome video game because I bought smexy awesome anime and posters of same series! I really won't even for a nanosecond consider not buying it if I think I will enjoy it because of some stupid review tough, I've never cared aboutt hose and never will . And I meet A LOT of people here in the Netherlands with my 3ds with "recently I have been playing: senran kagura burst", so apparently no-one else does either. GOOD >3
</rant> I am going back to watching samurai bride now! Also nice and ecchi anime, also ninja chickies~ check it out if you like ecchi~!! Later!

Looks like this column has jumped lock in step with the typical person who cares about social justice 'LOOK HOW EVIL GAMES ARE' nonsense that's infecting games journalism.
The clothes ripping is all done in a silly, over the top way. It actually is the same for Senran Kagura as is the Akiba's Trip games. If you actually played the games, you'd know they do so fully knowing it's absurd. Not as some means to actually advocate REAL clothes ripping. That's just an insane accusation to make. "seemingly random combatants" "unquestionably sexist", basically stuffing words in Xseed's mouth that they 'agree it's sexist'. Constant fearmongering, strawmanning, shaming. This is what this has come down to. It just sounds like the editor is way too sensitive or has a social justice bent to stoop to.
It's not an actual sexual assault simulator. Maybe it's hard to understand parody, but that's just the truth of it. And not everybody thinks sexual entertainment is demeaning or horrible. Bloodless beatdowns are far less 'uncomfortable' to me than just disrobing people and ending fights without an overly violent flair.
I find it disgusting that the columnist is bandwagoning into witchhunt of people who make/enjoy irreverent, sexual games.
Maybe it's too much to ask that people to separate real life issues from something an over the top game tries to do. But no, it's a constant presumption of malicious intent.
Funny how I find the columnist is the most offense of all in all this. Let me guess, gamers who enjoy these games for their insanity are criminals in the making? Is that where this is going? Playing games to make a 'statement' about how one lives and indicates their morality? Now THAT is a disgusting allusion. Just pathetic that people think it's kosher to push gender war conspiracy theories into everything. I was plenty disappointed with this column before, but this one takes the cake. I question whether the editor can ever make a column without invoking some bleeding heart social justice into where it doesn't belong. Apparently, anything that goes for an over the top flair or absurdity that games can have can't be received as just that.
"problem all too common in the entertainment industry"
A PROBLEM? Jesus. Games that are fully fanservice centric is in a small niche. One can't just aim to stamp it all out just because a certain someone has a moralistic tizzy with it. Advocating shaming, outright censorship and bans. Absolutely horrific. Absolutely shameful for a 'videogame editor'. The misinformation, the slander, the demonization. How is this even allowed?

Yes. Keep justifying blunt and rabid attacks against game creators and gamers.
Keep it up.

You know you just did the same thing here, except he actually listed reasons and backed up his opinion so he didn't just invalidate your post with 3 words. There is such a thing as being a person who cares about social justice and if he thinks that is your point then why is he not allowed to say so? To further his point you seem to find the game sexist BECAUSE it is aimed at men. Sometimes games are aimed at a specific audience not aimed at everyone, and that's ok. Not every game has to be made for everyone and no game is. That is what I took away from the review and that's why I disagree with the assessment.

I Don't see how that invalidates everything, I completely agree with what he wrote, and like most people here apparently, I am, like I said before, not going to let myself be stopped from buying, enjoying and/or supporting these games by a moronic column like this. I like senran kagura, most anime fans like senran kagura, we (or at least I) don't give a fudge about what some columnist think, I have the right to play what I want, and I *will* proudly play, buy and support this game. Capriche? IF you have a problem with that, then that's exactly that, your problem, not mine, because it's my choice what I want to play. If you think people actually care about this shit, I advice you to pay attention to what kind of anime are popular amongst your fellow fans next time you go to an anime convention, okay? You wanna complain be my guest, the other 40.000 people at the con will keep enjoying their ecchi and/or moe and/or yaoi. In 10 years these few peoples will still be complaining and the rest of the gaming world/human race will still not see the problem and it will still be popular. Enjoy complaining
One thing I want to point out tough is that he absolutely did not call for censorship. It was a irritating stupid column, it only makes me want to buy and play the game *MORE*, and it won't move *a single* soul not to buy the game or not to enjoy the awesome Senran Kagura anime/game anymore probably, but I don't like false accusations; the editor never directly suggested censorship, and with most people like this, if you suggest such a thing they (allmost) always say stuff like "I am against that" "off course not" "it's still people own's choice" etc. So let's not make false accusations and use our own freedom of choice to simply keep playing these games, ne~? I these days just find it funny to watch people whiny-whiny about these games, only to see them get just as/even more popular as a result. If you look at it like that (i.e. as if it were a comedian act instead of a serious effort to convince people) I found it also helps to keep my blood pressure down.
This is the last I'm gonna post in this thread lol, almost done watching samurai bride!

Maybe I can calm down to a point where it doesn't sound like I am attacking the editor. But I am plainly upset at the notion of outright 'stopping' certain levels of expression in games. I get it. They are niche. They are risque. But that is the whole appeal of it to some people. Not to mention the implications of real world moral consequence. If that's how the editor truly feels, that's that. Stuffing meaning into what Xseed said about the game? What can I say? That is just uncalled for as I see it. If the editor doesn't want to engage with me, fine.
I am just airing my frustration and some degree of anger at the article.

I love half-naked sexy beefcake men as much as the next person, but that doesn't mean I want to see them clearly upset and powerless after being physically beaten, waiting to effectively die. I mean, maybe it's just me, but doesn't that kind of take away the sexiness of the whole enterprise? Equating sex and powerlessness, essentially making the character an object to be ogled at by the player, is what is the problem here, and coupling that with violence is just gross.
I realize they aren't real people, but the point of an actual "character," with personality and whatnot, is to be relatable, the way an actual person would be. If the game sets up these characters to then be abused, that is propping up the player to sexual violence towards something that in some ways reflects real life. That's why it skeeves people out.
Also, if its supposed to be "parody," then why isn't the player "disrobing" ridiculous things, like taking the fur off cats or gears off robots or something? The images are there for the player to get off to. It's not a parody, its softcore rape porn.
