Looks like your typical S&M manga to me.... I think I saw at least 1 ep of the TV show at some point too...

Wrong manga my friend. There are two "Kodomo No Jikan" manga. Don't ask me why. The hentai one is by Akira Gotoh and is IS an S&M manga (sort of). The one we are talking about is by Kaworu Watashiya and it's not hentai, but can be considered quite ecchi. It does not contain any sex.

One of these things is not like the other. Sexualizing kids is bad enough, but are we really going to call rape an innocuous "interest"?

Well, plenty of people seem to get off on it. It's hard to escape rape, bondage, and abuse in hentai. Rape happens to be morally detestable in real life, but its not a big deal when its acted out in porn or hentai. Rape is very common in hentai and some released stateside even focus heavily on bondage and sexual torture (like Princess 69). And its hardly limited to Japanese porn. There are plenty of rape fantasies in Western porn along with the whole bondage fetish (which can include sexual torment as well). Yet no one seems to be on a crusade against it aside from those crusading against porn as a whole. Apparently, people can recognize that the people involved are paid 'actresses' or, in the case of hentai, not real. Hell, there is even Western porn in which of age 'actresses' pretend to be little girls, and that's not drawing fire either. But GOD FORBID we have drawings of little girls in 'sexual situations'.

How about we start with Battle Royale? I heard that manga had blood in it. I'm scared!

Oh, and it also had underage girls in explicit sex scenes! We can't let this get published! The media will discover it and it will kill the whole industry!

MPD Psycho is about to come out and I hear that is in the vein of Ichi the Killer and will probably make Berserk and Battle Royale look tame in comparison. Just imagine if the media got ahold of this! There would be a public outrage and the anime and manga community will go back to the dark ages..... Rolling Eyes

Of course, this society is far more tolerant of graphic violence, torture, and grotesque imagery, so it's not likely going to make much of a stir. I'm not saying it's right, but it's the truth.

it's just noon- I wonder when/how long before this thread booms.

I was reading some information on other anime sites and I heard theres another publisher for this book in other countires. Does this mean Canada might get the book?

If so i'm less than 30 minutes from border.

While not a fan of Nymphet of the Shouta genre, I am a large fan of yaoi, so this bit of news is also rather disheartening. If they start to go after LJ, then they may start to focus on yaoi & other taboo genre books and such sold in bookstores.

It's ironic that the two issues came up at the same time. There's a good rundown of the issues facing LiveJournal fan communities here.

In my opinion, I think Seven Seas did the right thing. Publishing Kodomo no Jikan could have easily lead to a repeat of the problems anime fans experienced when Minna Agechau was "exposed" by the San Jose Mercury News after AnimeCon in 1991. Although anime fandom is bigger today than it was then, being stereotyped by the press could still create some serious problems.

I can't believe he gave in to the criticism from people who've never read the book and denounced it as loli. I was seriously disappointed in Answerman's column and I don't plan on reading it again.

I never heard or read this book and this still pisses me off. Just because of the Student / Teacher thing. That crazy. It isn't even real and people are going crazy over the fact that there's a Student / Teacher thing going on. I bet you all or like 90% of those people who were against it were parents. I mean Come on, This isn't even porn. Look at all the damn porn and Playboy Channels and Playboy Mags and some porn type movies that are in America, but there going crazy over a drawing on paper that isn't even real. They are pissing me the hell off because of this.

I still think that they should of released it. And just put a T+ or an M on it or something so that the people who don't like it don't buy it. Atleast it would've gone to the Fans of the manga.

They just better not cancelle Strawberry Panic just because some people are against yuri, or I'm really going to be pissed off. I'm really looking forward to that manga's release.

btw what is loli ?

I'm sorry Seven Seas buy you've defintly lost a potential customer.

At least two I'd say. I think this is a pretty poor business decision on their part. People who were against Nymphet's publication aren't going to rush out and buy all the Seven Seas manga they can afford because they cancelled Nymphet, but people like us who were looking forward to it have certainly been put right off of them.

That's a rather narrow view, and one that obviously speaks to your lack of business experience. I mean no offense by that, it's just that consumers tend to take a rather one sided view of any thing a business does. This is really probably a very good decision on their part, and heres why.

A majority of their customers aren't even going to know this happened. The number of people who follow this stuff intently on the internet and then, when a given decision upsets them, boycott a company's product line as a result is an infinitesimally small portion of the market. Believe me, Seven Seas won't loose any sleep because 1/2 a dozen people on the ANN forums swore to never buy their products again.

Secondly, even if they had "thousands" of pre-orders for the title, the potential damage to their entire business model was simply too great of a risk, in their minds. Even if they made a good buck on this release, what if it had sparked some sort of firestorm, the potential damage to their product line was far greater. In other words, why risk making decent margins on a niche title when said title carries the risk of serious negative publicity for your company? The risk of publishing it simply wasn't worth the potential revenues, which probably weren't that great to begin with.

Really, at the end of the day, what this represents is more of what ADV's CEO was saying in his interview. If you're looking for companies to license, distribute, and defend a title with a market appeal as narrow as Nymphet's, you're in for a disappointment. There's no money in it. There's money in Full Metal Alchemist, Cowboy Beebop, and dime a dozen bishi yaoi romance manga. In reality, publishing this manga would have made absolutely no sense, and as has already been aptly demonstrated on this and other boards, anyone with enough interest in finding it and reading it (via scanlations or imports) will probably do so anyway.

"Loli" is short for Lolita complex, referring to a subset of anime fans who are attracted to underaged girls. The controversy about this book is not because of the student-teacher relationship, but because the advances that the 8 year old student makes on her teacher are blatantly sexual, and it is clearly done to arouse its audience.

Are you Santa?
Making your list & checking it twice.

So you had a title canceled. Join the club.
I've had titles pre-ordered for months that got pulled (Go Nagai set ADV was going to put out, Riki-oh or something like that MB shelved, the uncut YuGiOh & Shaman King spring to mind)
And in your misery you lash out at everything you can think of that you equate with your loss. Like people who whine to a cop when they get pulled over to be issued a ticket telling the cop to go bust hookers on whatever street they hang out on in your town.

It's not rape. It's referred to as "non-con". That way it doesn't sound as bad. And "non-con" fantasy fans don't like people pointing out it's rape fantasy.

As I said in another thread, this is such a freaking shame. No one takes risks anymore. Basing a decision on the flamings of one particular corner of the online anime community is really bad judgment. It never should have come to this, but people just have to screw everything up. Well done.

It's amusing to see posters playing the self-rightous martyr.

"Bwah, Bwah. The company did something of their own volition that I don't approve of! Censorship Censorship. They'll take my shota/lolicon from my cold dead hands!"

This was not going to be anything that they were going to be able to have on the shelves of B&N, Borders or Waldenbooks for any lenght of time, and you all knew it.
