In terms of visual novels, what do they mean by "episodes"? Unless it's a sequel, I don't know what they mean.

I believe it's the same concept as an episode or like a Volume of a manga. So it would be like a direct continuation. I think Umineko and Higarashi did the same thing in terms of naming. I think some English Doujin/indie games used Chapters, so Chapter 1 is released then you have to wait for Chapter 2. So that you can get bits released so you can play now and not wait 5+ years to release the full thing.

It might just be one of those translation quirks on how they use number counters, but I'd have to see what they called it in Japanese to say for sure.

This looks awesome. I wish they had more anime themed stuff on kickstarter ... or maybe I don't because I would be broke? I will back at the $150 level. You don't see stuff like this available in the United States very often.

All three episodes (that make up the complete story) were released in Japan as a staggered release during 2013. Shortly after that Spicy Tails (the developer) paid for the translation of the first game for English release on places like DLSite, but didn't sell enough for them to pay for subsequent episodes in English.

After they began work with Sekai Project for WEE EP 1's release on Steam, there was a good enough fan reaction for Sekai Project to commit to translating the rest of the story for English fans, but in order to do the best possible translation and make extra goodies available to English speaking fans, they needed to launch this kickstarter.

tl;dr - This game was released originally in 3 parts and the game's story is only complete by reading each of the "episodes" or parts. It works the exact same way as The Walking Dead adventure game by Telltale. The only difference in this case is that there are no other "seasons" outside these 3 parts.
