What's the BS ? Nintendo already is with K'nex (which the article fails to mention). And like anything with Macross the rights would be hell to work out, and doesn't have a super wide appeal.

Politics ? hah, this is LEGO catering to large young girl segment instead of the in comparison small anime fans.

Forget Macross, that old-style Japanese architecture set was amazing. What gets me is that none of the competitors won and Lego instead went with a previous submission, of which one of the probable reasons is to make up for the fact of the "Lego Friends" debacle.

Women's rights are important and I encourage a future where women are actively encouraged to be ANYTHING they want to be by society, but those "minifigure" sets are so bare-bones and plain that they may as well announce they did it because equality.

Well as seen here it should give you hope that these sets can win a future competition.

You do realise not all Lego sets have to be giant scenes, etc. ? Anyway I'm sure these will sell well, especially due to the positivity of people elsewhere on lego websites that want to see more different female sets.

They already have those sets.

This was my impression to. This was a PR move to go "Look, women can be scientists too, we're so progressive!" after people complained about Lego Friends being 'sexist'. The thing is Lego Friends was extremely successful for Lego. Unless these more 'progressive' sets sell better than Lego Friends, then it won't prove those complainers right.

Whatever, what they picked was overdue and it's a good thing. There'll be time enough for more nerdy LEGO things in the future.

Yeah, that seems the real reason why the "safe" set get picked up over the cost of licensing hell sets.

Whether there is a political/social context behind the decision, I think a large part of the reasoning has to do with licensing fees.

Never in a million years would Macross have been made. Yeah, the least exciting set won but I felt it was the most important. Girls don't often get toys that show women in roles like that, so I'm okay with it being chosen over the big fandom sets.

As awesome as the Macross set is, anything Macross or Robotech related is a serious pain-in-the-butt licensing wise, so I can see why they vetoed it.

LEGO really should consider teaming up with Nintendo, though. As popular as their franchises are, some Zelda, Mario, and Pokemon sets might turn out to be really profitable for them. I bet Nintendo would even be interested in it, too.
