I am so glad that "Happy Lesson" ended up on the list. Only one volume long, not making any sense what so ever, the cover art is so bad that it almost looks like a cheap porno. (Which is horrible when you're a straight as a line female) It's just horrible! I'd sell it but I only bought it for 5 bucks because I thought it would be like the anime, which is ACTUALLY GOOD. But nope! Now its buried under my manga shelf haunting me of the 5 bucks I could have spent on something better.

I'm also glad Christopher Hart has a place in manga hell. I bought his books when I was younger, back when I didn't know anything about anime or manga. Now they're in my closet haunting me, with it's cheap generic looking eyes and horrible looking character designs.

So when can we expect the follow up columns about climbing Manga Purgatory and ascending into Manga Heaven? I'm not even joking.

Hey! Kare Kano shouldn't be in Manga Hell!

Well, it was amusing to see Battle Vixens mentioned and just few inches to the right was the Ikki Tousen DVD article. And KareKano was actually entertaining... I think. Looking at the file dates, the last chapter I downloaded (volume 9) was back in 2003, so my memory's rather hazy. But checking the art, if I came across it today, I'd probably skip unless it came heavily recommended.

I'm not able to recommend anything to Manga Hell, as bad ones I delete and forget about pretty quickly, and I don't buy any without knowing what I'm bying so my shelves are void of what I'd call bad.

Manga Mania: Chibi and Furry Characters

What exactly do furries have to do with learning how to draw chibi characters, let alone anime in general?

I'd personally throw in the various Legend of Zelda manga by Akira Himekawa. Art-wise, they weren't that bad, but they adapted the games they were based very poorly. They either skipped things(sometimes the majority of the game) or unnecessarily changed things.

What I've learned (except the need to be Japanese):
- fighting over food isn't funny
- everyone can cook
- no pleasant dinner sittings
- know when to end your plots and story
- don't go overboard with gore
- no inner family fetish
- no lolicons
- don't rely solely on writing or art
- original character designs
- women aren't objects
- good art, solid transition, and a lack of repetition must compliment mindless action
- be original
- a complex, unique, and understandable power system that is there from the start an not built up as the story moves along
- have unique character designs
- sexuality is not a main selling point
- rape is not a cheap plot device
- do not plagiarize

Well, I'm off to rewrite some of my story. My main character is now going to punch his aunt at the dinner table.

Whoops, it looks like I missed a line in the "Pandering" section... It should read:

"It feels more like pimp/john than author/audience."

I never promised consistency. Also, just because they're in hell doesn't mean I don't love half these things, of course. -_-

I would have been disappointed if Eiken didn't end up where it was.

I don't know - Paradiso is by far the least interesting part of the Divine Comedy, and the good stuff and why it works is widely discussed - as opposed to the bad stuff, where it's usually and justly ignored. This was fun to see how the really bad stuff is organized (or good stuff that has some flaw)

Well now you've got me interested. That's one heck of a way to start a story

Hell is also the home to the endless mob of shojo manga about girls who meet super-hot crossdressing male models pretending to be women, including Tenshi Ja Nai!!, Never Give Up, W-Juliet and Nosatsu Junkie.

No, no, you've got it backwards, that's heaven. All the totally smokin' crossdressers must have clouded your mind.

And while we're on the subject, why has no-one licensed Usotsuki Lily? It's a Shueisha title, so get on it, Viz.

I'd put Gravitation in Manga Hell. I still don't have the words to explain coherently how cheap and offensive I found it. Especially as it kept (keeps) going I also started wondering about what Maki Murakami was thinking.
