Kill la Kill started great but lost its way later on. The overall story and the bad guys are a mess. Celestial clothes. WTF ? And the the "fan service" (maybe echi comedy would be more fitting) was very well done early but became really weird and fetishy after the middle.
The directors earlier efforts were noticeably better for some reason. Watch them first ! But recommend it anyway. One of the few good animes of the last year. 7/10

I am also astonished by Mononokes comparably "low" sales to the other Gibli movies. Its Miyazaki´s best film !
I also thought that Puella Magi Madoka would make more money.

Yes, Tom & Jerry is vastly outselling it on DVD, but on Blu-ray it's right up there in Disney/Pixar magnitude. That's wildly successful by anybody's definition.

Yeah, aside from the odd show for fujoshi/female otaku that really sell some DVDs, the format and its ranking charts are kind of irrelevant for most anime.

IMDB says that Mononoke is PG-12 in japan so a family audience is not out of question. I work in a german library and i lend out the movie every few weeks so expected it to sell 800.000+ It won mayor awards in japan and was nominated for an oscar !
The movie is right up there after Akira for me.
And yes rankings are kind of pointless. 2/3 of anime eventually make their money back and only very few series actually make big bucks today. So old disney classics it is.
Does anyone know how well the average hentai ova sells ? Some of them have to make in on the charts. Would be pretty funny if a hentai would outsell Mushishi 2. Or the opposite of that. Sigh.

I don't even know where to find statistics on that, but my impression is that they tend to sell maybe a thousand.
