no such a thing as "anonymity" when online. gov't know what you are doing. Rather they take action or nothing is another story.

And yet, another unemployed person arrested.
Seriously though, I got an grasp of the law forbidding to upload episodes/chapters of series without the authorization. But is it permit if you download episodes/chapters just for you and nobody else in Japan? (Assuming that you have no intention of uploading them to the internet) |

^ Uploaders are generally punished much more severely than downloaders, similar to how supplying/possessing with intent to supply drugs nets you a much harsher punishment than just possessing them.

It's a criminal offense in Japan now to download copyrighted material. The law was changed not too long ago, mainly at the behest of RIAJ (Record Industry Association of Japan) I'm not sure if anyone has been prosecuted under it yet though.
Look at the differing penalties though. ¥10m fine and/or 10 years in jail for uploading, but only ¥2m or 2 years in jail for downloading. |

Yeah, well it's not helping their music sales to go up either according to an article from Billboard Biz from March of this year. |

They depend too much on people buying multiple copies. |

Yeah well with the tax hikes (tax is going to go up 10% in 2015), the sales decline is going to get much worse. I mean I read this on Billboard Biz and I'll quote this:
I predict it'll get worse if this trend continue. |

Meanwhile the Japanese content companies can't get their act together enough to let me buy their music, even though online vendors like the iTunes store and Amazon have had access to their products for Japanese consumers for years. Look, if they made that stuff available to foreign markets I could buy it.
I would LOVE to buy a Mai Yamane album, or maybe some Ali Project. I would buy everything by Spangle call Lilli line! But guess what: the Japanese corporations think they will make more money by not letting me buy their products. I tried going through an importer a few times and usually end up with pirated works which obviously is better for them than just letting me download the albums from a legit distributor. |

I can feel your pain, I mean has Japan not learn anything from their Korean counterpart at all when it comes to making use of the foreign market. Also to add to the humiliations, Japan is pretty slow when it comes to new tech when their neighbor to the west managed to take advantage of that. That's why music labels in Japan won't make use of Itunes. Back in 2011, Avex Trax pulled a lot of their J-pop music from US Itunes, although they have started to put it back on US Itunes, not all of them are on Itunes. But I know how Japan is not really embracing the digital era unlike most of East Asia. |

I'm writing about Japanese pop music for my dissertation, and my research so far has found that the main reason Japan is so hesitant to embrace digital music is that the record companies have made CDs so successful over there that they'll do pretty much anything to keep them going (they're cheap to make, but can easily sell for upwards of $20 each over there).
Think about it logically, if you're the management of AKB48, and you put voting tickets/handshake cards etc etc in your CDs, you're not going to want to cheapen the experience for the CD buyers by making that music available digitally? Japan doesn't need the foreign markets. Its own domestic music market is the 2nd biggest in the world behind the US. |

Well the same was said about South Korea and Taiwan's music industry, they thought they didn't need the foreign market, but local sales was dropping over the years and in the end they have to rely on foreign market to sustain their industry. I'm afraid Japan will have to do the same at some point. You might want to read this interesting article and I pretty much agreed with this article. So I'm afraid I have to disagree with your statement you made above. Because South Korea relied on the international market both Asia and outside of Asia, they became the 10th largest music market in the world recently according to an article from Billboard Biz, making it the 2nd Asian country to make it on the top 10. Now I know being the 10th may not mean anything to you but it shows that international sales does play a role for that country to make it on the top 10. Sure South Korea is #10, but it didn't stop a UK girl group from becoming the first western artist to do a Korean-language version of a song. Also US is #1 yet they still relied on international sales for their music instead of keeping it domestically. So explain why US being #1 yet they still relied on international sales, when Japan is #2 and don't want to use the international market?? I know the real problem with Japan's music industry, like I said they're pretty slow to adapt when it comes to new tech (including the IT/ICT sector), and also they're not as ambitious as their neighbor when it comes to globalization and making use of the international market. That's how K-pop has gotten so big outside of Asia.
I would've scrap those and relied on the international market and not only rely on the domestic market. I was never a big believer in self-suffiency since many thing can go wrong with that. I would train AKB48 on singing in other foreign languages (Korean, Chinese, and English, and probably Spanish too) so they can be marketed for a global market and they can get a lot of money by using the international market. I would have AKB48 do a Korean-language album (I would have them sign up under SM Entertainment and have some of the member form sub-unit with SM artists and they'll sing in Korean and Japanese), Chinese-language album, and if AKB48 had a big fanbase in Latin America I might decide for them to do a Spanish-language album if needed. I mean that's how other Asian artists including K-pop did it, they sang in other languages and it help the music market for their countries in Asia. I would take advantage of the internet like Youtube (something AKB48 got right), use social media like Facebook and Twitter to reach out/interact to the international fans, and also I would make world tour very important (and a big priority) as in AKB48 would go to not only Asia, but also North America, Europe, Middle East, and Latin America and do concerts in those area. Reaching out to their international fanbases is very important, so that's why world tour are important not only for money but also to reach out to international fans too. So yeah a lot of these can make money. Itunes and other online digital music store to me is the key for them to do well financially and for profit too. Money is one important part, but interaction with their fans (both domestic and international) is also significant and important too. I would want AKB48 to reach out to their international fans too (it's very important if the fans really love them and if the group really love their fans), that's why I like online interaction via Google Talk, Skype to make it interesting (assuming several members of AKB48 can speak English, Korean, Chinese, Spanish, etc...). |
