I wonder if there's some cultural context lost in translation regarding blonde hair in Japan. Was is it ever a big issue before this? |

I could understand it if she wasn't the title character, but I hardly see an issue with putting the main character of a movie on a movie poster. I'm sure he wouldn't have complained if she had black hair, either, so he just sounds like a grouchy old man doing stereotypical "but my traditions!" complaining.

Some other sources are saying that it's because he thought the poster 'outdated and cheesy', which er I think is a really odd complaint coming from him.

The movie has two main characters. That's probably why he's being a grump about it. They could have added the other character in it as well some way or another.

He's entitled to his opinions but unfortunately when you leave something it is likely to do things your not happy with. Sometimes it's better to hold your tung especially if there is a potential that it could hurt the reputation of the company you helped found and build up.... And one your son is now so involved in.

I agree with Miyazaki over the use of a 'blonde' haired character. It's so typical of stereotypes about blonde women and blonde characters.

It's not a blonde girl, it's a mysterious blonde girl, and that's pretty much all the book's about. Whether he's "agitated" about the girl or the blonde hair, he'd have an actual complaint if it was one of his films. That's the problem with retirement. |

Then he tore the poster down and left the studio to go teach children how to use knives and start fires. Hideaki Anno joined him. Yoshiyuki Tomino, who for some reason was at Ghibli, even though he generally works at Sunrise, stayed behind to lecture everyone abut how much video games suck.

There's nothing mysterious about this girl. It's *obvious* that she's an American. Everyone knows that all Americans have blond hair and blue eyes. Sheesh.

I think some people here are missing the point.
I think he is probably angry at the fact that this poster is nothing more than just the character standing there. This poster doesn't say much about the movie besides "hey the main character is this blonde girl here, come watch the movie". That is cliche and outdated, he probably wanted something more creative that said more about the movie. |
