Bad choice. The Dr. Who episode, which focused on Madame de Pompadour (the woman who achieved great influence as the mistress of King Louis XV of France during the mid-18th century) was certainly better-written than Howl, as is nearly any episode of Battlestar Galactica. It may have been good, but not that good.

This just seems to prove my belief that Miyazaki is incredibly over-rated and no matter what he makes people will still love it because he's Hayao Miyazaki. In my opinion there wasn't a whole lot of substance behind Howl and it also felt somewhat broken and undeveloped. I can't believe it beat out Batman Begins. I really would like to know the reason behind them choosing Howl over the other scripts.

That's a surprising choice, and in my opinion, not a great one. I am a huge Miyazaki fan, but even I'll admit that Howl's script had me scratching my head and feeling like I was watching something unfinished (despite the gorgeousness). The only other nominee I've seen was Batman Begins, which I thought was a great movie.

I didn't really like Howl's Moving Castle. I'm surprised it actually won an award for best SCRIPT, since it was kinda hard to follow.

Wait... they got an award for their adaption of the novel? But it was a HORRIBLE adaption of the novel!

I guess the people handing out Nebula awards don't READ anymore.

Batman was by far a better choice.

Seriously, as much as I love the book Howl's Moving Castle, there's no way I could consider the movie script to be in the same tier as Batman Begins, Battlestar Galactica, or Doctor Who. The movie just didn't make any sense, and like I said, I've read the book.

Maybe the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America prefer scripts of a more cheerful nature...

I love the book, and i didn't think that Howl's Moving Castle was a bad movie either. But it certainly should not have won any awards for script. I haven't seen Battlestar Galactica or Dr. Who, but even Batman Begins, while a huge step forward for that franchise, wasn't deserving of it either (though in both films Christian Bale delivers an excellent performance).

I am wondering what the criteria was that excluded The Fountain from ths lineup? that should have gotten some awards, especially for the excellent script and acting.

There was a time when I used to read all of the Nebula and Hugo nominees every year. The Nebula is decided by a smaller committee of authors than the Hugo. The Hugo awards tend to line up with my tastes better, and I actually used to vote for the Hugo. These days I no longer have enough time to read the periodicals which include the novella and novelette which comprise of a good portion of the awards, so I no longer vote. I would be a bit more impressed if Howl's would have won the Hugo.

I actually liked Howl's a lot, but you have a point his best work Mononoke and Nausicaa are in the distance. But that said he's still putting out work that's easily in the top 3, I think the only person that I'd like to see more is Kon and that's because he's only getting better with time, unfortunately for Hayao he's at the end of his time.....as much as he won't admit that.

It beat 'Batman Begins' because 'Batman Begins' had a terrible script. Seriously, that sript shouldn't have been nominated.

And you saying this based on what, one work?

Ah, give me a break. 'Spirited Away' was much better than 'Nausicaa' and you simply shouldn't make statements like that. Seriously, you make Hayao sound like he's a hack.

As for Kon, I love him very much but to me his best work was 'Millenium Actress'.

If it's good enough for the Bebop movie, it's good enough for Batman. Besides, at least we can agree that it's better than Schumacher's versions.

Two. Spirited Away was average, and a cash-in to boot. At least Howl had him trying different things, even if he was mostly recycling.

Nausicaa was technically unfinished at the time, though; so it's not fair to compare it to Spirited Away. Plus Spirited Away came out after decades of films at the company, while Nausicaa was Ghibli's(well semi-Ghibli's) first production.

I agree there, but Paranoia Agent and Paprika made up for the abomination that was Tokyo Godfathers.

I think that all of us can agree that Batman has made a turn for the better, although I am not sure about Heath being the Joker.

He's not a hack, and personally I never could enjoy Spirited Away as much as I did Nausicaa. Sure Spirited away looks great, but I couldn't really seem to get into the story or characters.
