Really? It baffles me how odd their distribution tends to be for these. It is showing at 3 theatres within 10 miles of me and each showing I've been to has had less than 20 people in it, you would think they would be better served spreading things out a bit. I'm sure there are all kinds of rules and tape they have to work through though. :/ |

They got no reason to go wider when Mr. Peabody & Sherman will grab the majority of animated film movie-goers this weekend.

I am always appalled by how poorly his films do here. His movies make anywhere from 100-300 million worldwide, but never manage more than 5-10 million from the US.
Saw the movie this past week and loved it. Saw the subtitled version, and really liked the guy who voiced Hiroshi, he had a really flat voice, but it worked with a guy who was kind of an odd ball genius inventor. Also thought it was kind of the perfect film for Miyazaki to go out on, especially given the message and feel of the movie. |

Shana: Actually, it is impressive, considering most of those "wide release" anime films are specifically geared to children, while Wind Rises is PG-13, and not based off any recognized franchise. Only Persepolis is more successful than it ATM.
Crown: By the standards of anime films released in the U.S., that's huge. |

About 90% of those gross are from Japan, so it's not just the US.

This was never really aimed at kids anyway, and both Lego and Mr. Peabody would be better choices for children and families, and besides Lego being fantastic, Mr. Peabody sounds like it's pretty good as well.
I was alone at my showing. Who's in more control for film acquisition, the distributor or the theater owner? Well, I expect Kaguya will be even more scarce, probably just a couple hundred showings in major coastal areas. |

It won't show in most places, period... IF you don't have an art theater with an aggressive exhibitor, you're not going to see it before home video release, period. That said, there's much better chance you'll be able to see a Ghibli film in-theater (arthouse) than you will 95% of the other anime out there. Frankly, your chances of enjoying a Ghibli film are much better than most other films, too. I've enjoyed more anime TV series than non-Ghibli features to be sure. I've seen maybe 8 anime features in theaters including the Disney-distributed Ghibli films. Frankly, I'm surprised that Miyazaki chose to do a film based on this subject... maybe the execution came out better than the plot synopsis I've read -- and I'm someone interested in World War II aviation, too! I think something more fantastic or action-oriented would have been a better send-off feature but maybe he just didn't have the energy to do that anymore... |

Wide releases for anime movies here are exceedingly rare, only Ghibli movies can get them now. |

That's probably because they play art/college theaters. Ponyo did, last time it was here, until the college theater closed down, and then the other one ten miles away had to show Poppy Hill and Wind Rises. The exception was Arietty, of course, which COULD be marketed to cineplex audiences, but then, that's because Arietty isn't Poppy Hill. |

I luckily got to see it this past weekend and loved it. They showed the dubbed version at a theater not too far from where I live. There were only four other people at the movie though.

I was just super happy I got to see this last weekend since I missed it twice already where it was playing before. Had to drive an hour to the theater and there were 8 people besides me and the person I convinced into coming (it was pretty much all couples, mostly middle-aged). I haven't been able to see any of Miyazaki's films on the big screen since Spirited Away and this one is beautiful. Definitely worth it if you're lucky enough to go.

And you'd think with the way cinemas were forced into digital projections thanks to Hollywood, these things would not be a fuss to bring over but I guess they still are.
Well you were one happy camper, at least I've seen 3 of his films on the big screen before. |
