If they brought in Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine and Steve Albini as consultants, this could end up being a series of movies. And I'd be glued to the screen for all of them.

Don't even know why I'm bothering with this but:
"attempts the classic guitar riff "Smoke on the Water," but is dissatisfied since it doesn't sound like the CD."
Great musical exploration there! What, is she just starting to learn the electric guitar or something? Anyway, some basic research would have informed them that, rather than pedals meant to replicate the type of distortion used in various metal styles from the '80s onwards, one of the following would have been better suited: an actual valve amp, as Blackmore would have used at the time of recording; a distortion pedal that replicates the sorts of effect commonly used in the late '60s/early '70's e.g. overdrive or fuzz; a producer with some basic knowledge of distortion and equalization. In fact, all you need are such basic production skills and a decent DAW with suitable plug-ins. These so called musicians should really try and learn some basics before blaming their kit for their own ineptitude.

Then I have to ask - how exactly is she famous? Again, rather pointless - the Japanese popular music industry is arguably less based around talent than America's.

She is not famous. She is a high school girl who is learning to play the guitar.
"She" is the character in the anime, not the musician who created the anime.

Then I'd suggest it's not a very good analogue - beginner guitarists/musicians in general are unlikely to have a great ear for timbre, tone, balance etc., so she should probably have concentrated more on actually developing skills than buying unnecessary tech: buying an effects pedal when you can only play the simplest riff in the history of rock suggests you have more money than sense. This is a problem with many fledgling electric guitarists - they fixate far too much on the kit than actual basic musicality. Learning some simple production theory is much more beneficial than relying on multi-effects units and the like, and it seems pretty evident from the other pictures that she's been doing the latter. Blaming the experts who create such stuff for her musical failings is pretty sad.
