I would like to follow up a very interesting debate that got started in The future of North America anime thread. Do you really want anime to be mainstream? Because, usually when something become mainstream trouble always follows. For example,if videogames was still a niche thing the hot coffee scandal would not have been as big of a deal as it was. Or if Youtube would have stay underground it would not have as many legal issues as it have now. These cases prove that going mainstream is not always a good thing. Do you really think that anime can handle a hot coffee size scandal? Or do you really want to see Capital Hill making special hearings about how much blood and gore there are in anime? Keep in mind that what got videogames in trouble with Capital Hill in the first place. I just do not want to see CNN or ABC making bogus special reports and painting anime in a bad light. These are the faults of something becoming mainstream. Sure,it would make the business a lot of money in the short term but it will cost so much more in the long run. The longer a thing stay niche is the better because propanganda always follows when something become mainstream.

First off, not to sound rude or anything, but a majority of your post just did not make a whole lot of sense to me. Sure I do understand that you have a problem with you not wanting to see anime go "mainstream" but what exactly do you mean by "hot coffee scandal" and Capital Hill having hearings so they can monitor how much violence/blood/gore is in each anime.
What title(s) are you referring to exactly that makes you concerned about them going mainstream?
I also am having a hard time understanding, from your point of view, how making an anime title mainstream, would have any adverse effects to either the specific title(s) you're concerned about, or Anime as a whole.
I've always thought that the more people who watch anime and even more people who discover anime for the first time is not only great for the viewer, but for every person it takes to make and distribute anime to the public.
Websites like YouTube and fansubbers really do a lot of damage to the people whos whole job is to make anime for everyone to enjoy, end up getting ripped off of all their hard work.
There have been a few anime series that I would consider "main stream" such as Pokemon, Yugioh, Dragonball, Dragonball Z as well as some others. But I don't see how any of those titles did anything bad by being popular, other than certain age groups that a majority of the series are targeted at.
Well I've said about as much as I can say is regards to your post which I am still having problems with understanding completely. Hopefully after reading my post, you can elaborate more on exactly what bothers you with anime going mainstream.

I could have sworn this discussion took place already.

Short answer. Mainstream has more money. More money. More anime.

Something going "mainstream" is not something that's controlled. Increased demand = increased availability (unless business is retarded) = increased popularity (aka "mainstream"). While something like information may be censored, you can't really make a mass of people say "no" to anime just to prevent it from becoming popular. I mean, why do you think it becomes popular in the first place? :)

I can kind of sympathize with the message the op poster is getting across that mainstream is not always good but I have my own perspective on that which doesn't really have much to do with the negative prospects that Naruto Fan has described. He seems more concerned with the usual bureaucracy and corruption that can occur with the media and government when they get a hold of something that's been separate from public view and then enters the limelight.
My gripe about the mainstreaming of anime is the overall effect it may have on the quality and content of the anime itself. I know it's already happening and we've seen proof of it not just with titles that are intended for a World or N.A. audience like Animatrix, Afro Samurai and Highlander: Vengeance but titles intended for a Japanese audience that seem to be pressured by foreign interests to make shows more appealing to non-Japanese. This is something that I truly fear, it's minimal right now so I'm not too concerned but it may be just a little paranoia but I sense alot of change is occurring these days.

The only reason I really fear anime going "mainstream" would be the loss of interaction between us and the industry reps. We're a small, small market and the fact that we get to ask questions and get answers from reliable sources on forums is awesome. Except for financial information, we know quite a bit about the companies licensing and releasing anime to us- I wouldn't want that to change. We're a real small community and I like that.
Actually, I have one more fear: that more R2 companies would move in on the R1 market.
But I wouldn't be too worried about this topic. Outside of shows like Pokemon, I doubt anime will ever become something "mainstream". I honestly can't say I want it to become popular- it's fun to be part of the small anime fandom, but I'm sure it would have its advantages.

Seriously Toei tried and failed quite miserably and now Bandai Visuals is on the fast track to the same place.
Personally I don't think that Anime is going to be mainstream, it had it's highs around the DBZ/Pokemon of the early 2000. And lots of people were introduced to anime and lots of companies started licensing everything and guess what they found out the market can't support that many different properties, look at ADV for my point.
I wouldn't mind anime becoming mainstream it could lead to more competition which is always a good thing from a capital perspective but I just don't see it getting any bigger then it was a few years ago.

The problem I am worried about is if anime goes mainstream companies will think they can spend less effort on the series. I don't want them to get lazy and figure "Oh hey this'll get played on tv all the time so we can make it only semi-decent." that's my only concern. As it stands now I don't see it going very mainstream. The market could change though, hard to predict these things.

I want anime to be as mainstream as possible actually. I'm confident that the titles I tend to watch will never be mainstream, but the more people who buy anime the more chance they'll get licensed and released at a good value.

I might add on, more money, more ideas to come up with an attack on something. Which means more money from gullible people for your cause

Ya the also worries me, what worries me more is that lame companies, who's work are really awful, would want to get in on the action such as 4Kids. Everything that 4Kids does really s*cks. Their work on One Piece really sickened me. Just imagine...if all the anime would be done by 4Kids...

and more people to talk too, more people to argue with, more people to hate and more people to attack and steal their collection.
Seems good to me.

Mainstream would be a good thing as more popularity would mean more money to the compaies which would enable them to buy more titles (hopefully one of which would finally be Monster ) and finally the bigest advantage of all....lower the darn pricing scale so it doesn't tear into my wallet as much to be the DVD collector that I am.

But there's a price to being called a DVD collector as opposed to a person who collects DVDs and that is why there is competition among fans to get premeire, LE versions of anime series and collections. The premium pricing structure of LE editions is there for a reason; it benefits retailers to only stock a minimal amount that are more likely to sell out because of the greater profit margin of those editions compared to standard release titles. The fact that they will sell out makes them more appealing to collectors and thus the justification of making them as expensive as they are. Yes more mainstream leads to greater demand but I don't like seeing product collectability suffer just for the sake of product availability.

Becoming mainstream would be great for me, I suppose. Many, at this time, at my school are still quite ignorant of the anime style and love to be had in a great series, but then there are also a group of people I have come to know who are into anime, manga, and the big H. I can only hope for more people to know these things because they are great and quite fun to discuss!
Also, right now it's hard for me to learn about good anime because of its small role in the current pop culture without feeling like being run over by a bandwagon.
