-Ah, Zaizen Jotaro... Yeah, the animation is extremely low-budget (but the insane amount of cut-ins are sometimes really clever & cool) and the concept is both absurd & awesome, but I really enjoyed watching it. Zaizen himself just had so much charisma, the story was a fun look at dirty politics & how something like a Japanese equivalent of the FBI could work in theory, and I do think it's been somewhat-unfairly misjudged... Somewhat-unfairly, mind you (that damn horrific first episode that has absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the show!).

-CrunchyRoll has to see if they can do anything about getting them to be the #1 result on Google when people search for anime streams. My cousin had to be told by me & friends about CrunchyRoll because all he knew were those other sites, which he thought was official, and now he's going to CR to help support the industry. Another thing CR has to slowly combat is the fact that those illegal streaming sites have tons of anime that isn't on CR, mainly because they are just streaming fansubs. Obviously this isn't something that CR can fight quickly, but hopefully over time that will be lessened.

-In terms of Sherlock Holmes there is a TV special Toei made back in 1981 which had the actual man go up against the original Arsene Lupin (the name actually is Arsene Lupin vs. Sherlock Holmes)... But, obviously, there's no way to watch it English. I'd definitely check it out, though. The Great Mouse Detective is awesome, though.

-All great choices for the video game anime question, though I really liked Gungrave all the way through (but, then again, I also enjoyed the original game [Overdose was better, though]). I also really enjoyed the Salamander OVA series, based on the Gradius series. It took the crazy idea of adapting a shoot-em-up into anime & actually made it work out really well. Ninja Ryukenden (based on the Ninja Gaiden series) was also pretty fun & surprisingly violent compared to the original games; almost a precursor-of-sorts to the reboot series.

-Pretty cool that both Daryl & Gerald picked shows from 2004 that they really liked, since I covered that year for the Golden Ani-Versary. As for New Getter Robo, I'm with Daryl; that show's awesome. I think part of the problem was that existing Getter fans at the time were expecting something like the previous Getter Robo anime that had been made in the previous years, especially Armageddon, and what they got was a bat**** insane title based conceptually on the original manga. Anyway, I really loved it's crazy style & no-holds-barred violence, complete with a bunch of awesome insert songs, but I will admit that the ending kind of lost me. I won't hold it too much against it, Go Nagai and all, but it was pretty "What the hell just happened?".

Are none of you watching the awesomeness that is Nobunagun? Hands down the best show on right now.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is excellent. Good to hear it get a mention. Obviously anyone who follows western animation at all knows all about Pixar and Disney but there is a lot of good stuff from other studios. Rango too. The art design in that movie is to die for.

Guess I have to check out Steven Universe. I'm up on Adventure Time and Gravity Falls and the usual stuff but I haven't started on that yet.

He who controls the tapes controls the universe.

Space Dandy isn't Cowboy Bebop and by all rights was never going to be. And that's okay.

It's good to hear Clarissa on a podcast again. She's barely even on AWO anymore.

I wasn't foolish enough to fall for Lupin III vs Detective Conan the first time. These characters don't need to exist in the same universe, have no reason to. The theatrical feature doesn't even look like the production values were any better than the usual annual TV specials. How do you go 17 years without a Lupin theatrical feature and then put something like this trifling, forced nonsense in theaters?

Samurai Flamenco stopped being entertaining when it actaully became about fighting real monsters. I liked it better when it was just Japanese Kick-Ass.

Obviously to fill content, ANNCast needs me. Because I'm such a highlight of the call-in show I was in, what with my awkward rambling and 12 year old girl voice coming from an adult man. You could call the segment "Skip This Part". Perhaps a Penguincast. Excellent...

The only American cartoon I've been interested in lately from a storytelling perspective has been Legend of Korra, but sometimes I tune in to Adventure Time. I haven't checked out Steven Universe yet. Everybody talks about how great Frozen is, but for the life of me, I can't bring myself to interest in even seeing that. The trailer made it looks really lazy and generic.

I think the live-action Patlabor has promise, not just visually. Oshii is still writing and directing it. The live-action Yamato movie was okay, but they spent too much time on a couple of sets and nothing on the rest. It feels like the whole movie takes place in the same four rooms and there's none of the pathos for either sides of the conflict. I'm more worried about the new live-action Lupin III movie. Lupin should be easier than, say, Patlabor, to do, but every time I read something new about it, it looks worse and worse. I hear the 20th Century Boys movies were extremely expensive movies, at least for Japan.

Gundam Build Fighters is shameless crap. I mean, yeah, I know, Gundam has always been a commercial, but it's unwatchable. The game the characters play doesn't even make sense. Why do they even need the models to play the game? How does good model building translate into the stats of a virtual reality video game? Just program the good MS into the game. And why not just use a Turn A Gundam and Moonlight Butterfly everybody?

And if anyone thinks that's weird, Sherlock Holmes actually appeared in the original Arsene Lupin novels from the early 1900s. Well, he did until Arthur Conan Doyle sued the hell out of the author and he changed the character to Herlock Sholmes.

To mirror what a poster above me said, I myself was a fan of anime for at least a year before I even became aware of legal means of streaming and even longer for home releases. This took a decent bit of research and willpower. When I finally found funimation's site it took 8 or 9 visits until I discovered they stream video. I know this is not news but I think this eludes to anime's extremely high barrier to entry.

I think the market is there, the legit companies just need to infiltrate the lazy consumer base that is going to let google and hulu/netflix reccomendations dictate their viewing habits.

It seems like half the people that comment on youtube have some sort of anime character as their avatar, and it's frustrating how many times I've seen them recommending the use of pirates sites because they are ignorant to the existence of sites like crunchyroll and daisuke.

I just have a few observations on Space Dandy based on the comments I have heard about it (I have not, nor do I plan to watch the show).

Shinichiro Watanabe is one of the best directors I have come across. Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo are very fun to watch and the action sequences are greatly choreographed. Kids on the Slope is not an action show, but I am amazed at how Watanabe and the rest of the staff managed to cramp 45 manga chapters into 12 episodes and create a story that feels very complete and satisfying.

That being said, I feel that some fans are giving Space Dandy a free pass because the great Watanabe is involved in the project. For every good thing Space Dandy has going for it (great animation and high entertaining value), there is a negative like boob jokes and a lots of stupidity. I mean, were not we complaining a year ago about how ridiculous and stupid Sword Art Online is.

Sword Art Online and Space Dandy have high production values, but they do not seem to have much going for them other than looks and mindless entertaining. Despite this Space Dandy seems to be getting a lot of love.

Note: I am not trying to defend Sword Art Online; it is not a good show.

The rest of your post was made irrelevant right there man.
Criticizing a show without even having seen 1 freaking episode is - I don't know how to put it - immensely stupid.

Wasn't SAO trying to tell a serious story?

That's probably the big difference. That and Watanabe. Watanabe on a bad day is better than a lot of people on their best. So even if he's goofing around, it's still very entertaining.

You know there is an art and way to do "stupid fun comedy" right. Not saying Space Dandy does it, but these criticisms towards shows that aren't intellectual shows are usually "it's dumb" "it's stupid" blah blah.

But there's ways to do that very well.

I really like Kill La Kill. Now maybe there's an undercurrent theme of being true to your morals and cloths are a metaphor for something else. I don't know, I don't think the the show is as tightly plotted and executed like Gurren Lagann. It's a very stupid show really, but it's so well done. You could call it mindless since a lot of it's appeal is the fighting, but it isn't mindless. There is serious craft and direction in how those fights are done. Real imagination in how the show uses perspective and design. The constant kinetic action of the characters to be humorous takes real skill from even making sure the music fits the scene. Hell the show even does what very few anime do and uses the bad animation to it's advantage. Like the scene in what episode 2 or 3 where Ryuko floats down the sewer or where Uzu is knocked out of his 2nd fight with Ryuko. The bad animation is almost a gag in-itself and it's really quite funny. Because the show is executed so well that almost every frame entertains.

I don't know if Space Dandy does the same thing, but if it's gleefully stupid and does it well then just saying "it's mindless and dumb" really dosen't so much. It's not an insult if the show is trying to do that and succeeding.

I mean if thats the over the top tone the show goes for. From what I can tell Sword Art Online does not do that. It is trying to tell a serious plot with serious characters you are supposed to like because of thier "well" crafted personalities that are supposed to be nuanced. You're supposed to like Space Dandy because he's fun and ridiculous. There's quite a difference.

This was a fun episode to listen to, I hope you bring them over move often.
I wanted to check out Steven Universe, but didn't make much effort. Hearing some good things about it though, I'll be sure to give it a try.

I second this.

And am I the only one who didn't care for Metal Gear Rising plot-wise. Normally, I eat up every Metal Gear game like they've been laced with cocaine, but I just couldn't stand the story and I absolutely hated the end boss; I cringed every time he opened his mouth.

Rising was over the top and very fun. Raiden's turn to the dark hero who will kill because well it may be needed and he's a killer, might as well kill for good was pretty cool. It was very silly and over the top, but it had scenes like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMeqlyORegg

So I feel the people behind the game get it.

Besides after the one two punch of crap known as MGS4 and PW, I'm not sure how anyone can care about MGS much less it's plot anymore.
