It is to do a live test for the studio to see if they can pull it off for future projects.

How long has it been since we have gotten an anime for the kiddies.
And i don't mean stuff like yu-gi-oh or pokemon.
Children's stories getting adapted in general seem to be a rarity anymore.

An Astrid Lindgren story isn't something you use as a "test".
I'm going to stay sour about this until I see a trailer.
Hopefully Ghibli and Polygon Pictures won't disappoint.

Also, I suggest you all go watch the 1984 Ronia the Robber's Daughter movie if you haven't already.

Oooh... I don't know what to think about the 3D part, but I adore this story. I grew up with Pippi Longstocking books but didn't come across any of the author's other works until I was an adult. I found the book at a library sale a year or so ago, and the combination of known author (who I was curious to read more of) and a cover illustration by one of my favourite artists (Trina Schart Hyman for the edition I've got) had my attention immediately. The story has really fascinating characters and such a delightful setting. I look forward to hearing more about this project!

(jet_, I haven't seen the movie, but I'll be sure to seek it out on your recommendation!! Thanks!)

Really looking forward to this. I can't even remember the last time we got an anime tv series, based on a classic western novel. Disregarding the fantasy-fied versions of Romeo&Juliet or the Count of Monte Christo, which I also liked.
I watched a lot of World Masterpiece Theater shows as a kid and I miss anime series like that a lot. Stuff like Little Women, Princess Sarah or The Dog of Flanders is something you just don't see anymore these days.
I hope Ronia will be reminiscent of those adaptions and provide interesting drama for children and adults alike.
Of course, I'm kinda sceptical about the choice of doing it in 3D CG (because a lot of anime has REALLY shitty CG), but I'm willing to give the creators the benefit of the doubt until I've watched a few episodes.

I suspect that's what you'll be getting - cel-shaded 3D models, possibly on good old hand-drawn Ghibli nature porn.

I don't think I've ever seen 3D out of Japan that I would call "good," at least in a TV series. but it's not impossible, in theory, and Ghibli has talent and money...

Maybe Fireball

Don't forget Black Rock Shooter.
Watch the Knights of Sidonia trailer and decide for yourself if you think Flying Dog can do it or not.
