Of all the things I loved about Otakon 2013, the one thing I regretted was not going to Charles Dunbar's panel. Thank you very much for this podcast.

The reason Her won't win Best Picture is because Electric Dreams already did it.

Re Slavery:
Like Justin, I grew up in Michigan, which is largely not considered to have been a slave state.
A couple years ago, we were in South Carolina and we wanted to check out this botanical gardens that is on a former plantation house. While on the tour, one of the guides was sure to point out how "the slaves didn't have it half bad, they didn't have to work on Sundays (I assume because Jesus wouldn't like that), and were given food and shelter and allowed to have their own form of trade and barter economy among the slaves."
Definitely did like a quadruple take on that statement before my girlfriend and I figured out that the woman was completely serious.
Neither of us had ever been exposed to that kind of sentiment before. We were raised on "slavery=bad." Zero grey. We didn't even know how to react.

TBH, I actually prefer Space Dandy to Bebop. But maybe it's just 'cus it's as close to an official Lupin VIII show as we're gonna get.

Really got to agree with Zac, America really hasn't touched on slavery that much outside of either "Slavery was bad thank god the white people lead by Abraham Lincoln stopped it" or "The people who complain about Slavery are just whining. Slavery was the best thing that happened to these people since it got them to America the greatest country on Earth".
The only show I ever hate watched was Code Geass and Gundam 00 Season 2 (I like the first season of Gundam 00), and it killed my interest in having a discussion about anime week after week. There is no point in having a discussion about an anime you hate outside of explaining why you didn't like it. Giving a series a chance is watching 5-10 episodes if it doesn't get good after that than chances are its never getting good.
If I am going to have a discussion on anime I would rather discuss Gundam, Rurouni Kenshin, or Fullmetal Alchemist because I think there is value to those series.

Some people, like me, liked it. I think it definitely deserves to have counterpush against the main consensus of hating it. The first 2/3 are pretty involved and intelligent. The last third is basic action stuff, but isn't even terrible at that.

I beg to differ. The whole thing is stupid as hell:
- why are the super-soldiers not trained in anything?
- why do they cry for the dumbest of reasons?
- why are they so stupid as to believe anyone about anything?
- why would you made your super-soldiers school girls with not actual experience?
- why didn't they just make actual super-soldiers, with the correct training and professional mind set?
- why did the leader continue to waste precious serum on people that COULD NOT BE SAVED?
- how can they not recognize a bomber?
- why does a bomber act and move like an Apache attack chopper?
- why would you send emotional unstable people with a bleeding-heart "I don't want to kill anyone" mentality into a know hostile environment?
- why don't they just DISABLE the enemy if they don't want to kill him, or at least TRY to disable him instead of going for the "I don't want to fight" lecture?
- why would you make unstable serial killers into super-soldiers?
- the list goes on, and on, and on...
Suspension of disbelieve is one thing, retarded writing is another.

and why would you send these very special individuals into a broken hostile place in school uniforms. Their clothing would not have been adequate for a hike in the woods.

I greatly enjoyed Dunbar's Miyazaki panel at NYCC 2010 ( I was the guy in the Fourth Doctor costume).
I wanted to see his Evangelion panel, because based on descriptions, I'm uncomfortable that he's trying to focus on Judeo-Christian symbolism in the show...which the writers themselves later said was basically chosen at random.

Interesting Podcast.
Yeah I've never understood the point of hate watching something. If I lose interest in something I drop it. There's plenty of things I do like, no need to waste time on something I hate.
As for the cross pollination of fanbases, personally I think it's a good thing, shows people have a variety of interests and don't want to soley focus on the anime, brony, whoovian, gamer, whatever aspect. I don't see anything wrong with people Cosplaying as non anime characters at an anime con, nor is there anything wrong with cosplsying as anime characters at scifi, comic, brony, gaming, etc conventions

My favorite excuse is that somehow the north was just as bad because we treated the poor and Irish like shit.
As if it's on the same level.
On the subject of the movie itself: It's a great movie and everyone should watch it. Having watched it myself I never want to see it again. It's a bit like Schindler's List in that respect, glad I watched it, don't ever really want to see it again.
I also totally agree with Zac about Her, fantastic and definitely the best of the best picture nominees. I also like Wolf of Wall Street a lot, but Scorsese has done that type of movie before, it's not exactly unfamiliar territory for him.

Sci-fi culture about anime makes sense because there is sci-fi anime. Anime culture talking about non-anime things doesn't because they are not anime.
I go to anime outlets to talk about anime, and by extension Japanese media and culture since it is all connected. I don't care if people want to make the excuse of "but some anime fans really like ________!" because it's being a weak justifications to include things. You might as well complain why an anime site doesn't have a section dedicated to posting pizza recipes or how to build toolsheds because 'some anime fans like pizza and building toolsheds!" If people want to discuss other things, they should go to a place dedicated to it. Seeing conventions becoming more and more accepting to irrelevant crosspolination is why I stopped going to them, as well as just growing older and choosing to focusing more on the Japanese side of the industry after graduating high school. I find it's why Comiket is still a great convention to go to but AnimeExpo and Otakon are just unpleasant when I have to squeeze past dozens of bad Homestuck, Dr. Who, My Little Pony cosplayers.

Meh, I understand where your coming from, but stillsounds kind of fickle to me. But to each their own. Admitingly I'm not a big con guy so maybe that's why the thought of cons becoming more generalized nerd/ pop culture gatherings doesn't bother me that much, hell might make me wanna go to more.
As for other topics in the cast. The more I hear about "Her" the more I wanna go see it.

Amen to that.
Now that BronyCon is a thing-and is held in the same location as Otakon-even the tenuous justification for bronyism at Otakon is out the window. Why must our anime cons become "melting pots" while other "nerdy cons" remain comparatively pure and homogenous. Where is the battalion of anime cosplayers at Bronycon or Comic-con? Where is the bounty of anime-related panels at those non-anime cons? I can point out to you the non-anime cosplayers at Otakon-it's probably harder to point out anime cosplayers-but they're rarer then hen's teeth at these other cons.
