I wish the Viz Media version of shonen jump would add series more frequently like the Japanese version does. It's nice to have something fresh every week or two. I'd even take more one-shots at this point.

Damn, I just noticed that Himedol has about only 16 chapters. I've been really enjoying it and was hoping the series would of been a bit longer...

It's not necessarily to "keep things fresh."
In the Japanese WSJ, they constantly add new things, but also cancel just as many things at the same pace in order to try and find new "hits." If a new series doesn't perform well, it gets booted out within a few weeks (like these two in the article. New series are usually given anywhere from 10-40 chapters to perform.)

I think the English side wants to add just as many series as well, but getting the rights to publish manga here does cost money, and because a lot of the "new" series could get canceled quickly, it sometimes isn't worth it- which is why they have to be so careful with what they get.

Hope this helps Smile

IIRC, for English WSJ it's more a question of paying translators to work on additional series.

Tough environment for new series to get a hold right now, especially after 2012's successes having secured their own spots. Not counting the revolving door newcomer spots, the only series I'd expect to possibly get overtaken in the near future are probably... World Trigger or Soul Catcher(S), if either of them falter, and possibly Beelzebub's potential wrapping up.

It's not about "adding series".
It's cynical selection for cancellation. Series that do not get enough votes do not get to live for very long. And right now WSJ is so crammed with "steady" series that almost no new series can hope to find a lasting place in the magazine unless they are of extraordinary quality from the very start.
WSJ seriously needs to end and/or transfer some series to make some space.
The end of Bleach and Naruto cannot come soon enough. More space for fresh blood to duke it out "fairly".

Viz is the American arm of Shueisha, the same people running the Japanese WSJ, so I don't think they have to worry about publishing rights/licensing costs. I think it's more the translation, editing, publishing costs that they have to worry about.

Naruto really looks like it's in its home stretch at this point. It's on hiatus until January, but after that they basically just have to spoiler[beat Madara], tie up some character stuff, and do an epilogue. That could still take a while, but I predict it'll end in 2014.

Aren't both of those series fairly new? They must have been doing awful.

WSJ is hardly unique in comics in terms of fierce turnover of new series. The difference being they're all housed in a single publication.

Of course they have to do well from the start, this is WSJ - the most competitive magazine possible. And your point has no baring, Beelzebub usually gets in the bottom 5 and Bleach hasn't exactly been hogging a top spot recently (normally mid to bottom) so newer series are taking them.

Look at Shokugeki no Souma, that has taken the top spot multiple times. Soul-Catcher(s) has been doing pretty well in the mid-rankings and series only a few years old are going steady (Toriko, Nisekoi) there is plenty of space for new series. Let's not even get started on Assassination classrooms success.

It looks like once Bleach and Naruto end there's no shortage of manga to fill their boots, and for the most part they aren't action adventure shounens.
